Microsoft has taken a playful jab at Sony’s recent news that the PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controllers would only work with PlayStation 4 games on the upcoming PlayStation 5.
Following afew jokes made at PlayStation’s expenseby Microsoft UK’s Marketing Lead, Samuel Bateman, the official Xbox UK Twitter account has also chimed in on Sony’s controller limitations. In the tweet, @Xboxuk brought to gamers attention how Xbox Series X is backward compatible with “ALL Xbox One controllers.” It stressed how this is true across all Xbox games before listing that this cross-compatibility included official Xbox controllers, Xbox adaptive controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless controllers and SCUF controllers.

This purposeful cross-compatibility is representative of Microsoft’s next-generation plans with the Xbox Series X, allowing gamers an easier and seamless transition between current and next-gen consoles. Making the crossover all the more appealing arecontinued services such as Game Pass, which will include hotly-anticipated first-party games. It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series X will also boast backward compatibility with Xbox One.
Controller support isn’t the only thing Xbox fans will be able to enjoy upon the Xbox Series X’s launch. Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system will also give gamers the opportunity to upgrade their Xbox One games to their next-gen counterparts for free. It is not known at the time of writing if Sony intends to offer PlayStation gamers an equivalent service, though the company did state gamesmay be updated at the “publisher’s discretion.”
Microsoft’s Smart Delivery will see players given the freedom to upgrade first-party titles likeHalo: Infinite,Gears of War 5andSea of Thieves. It’s not limited to first-party games, either. Third-party titles such asCyberpunk 2077,Assassin’s Creed ValhallaandMarvel’s Avengersare also a part of Smart Delivery, with even more titles expected to be announced prior to the console’s release.
Sony has previously explained that PlayStation 4’sDualShock 4 controllers wouldn’t be natively compatible with PlayStation 5 gamesdue to the new features within the DualSense wireless controller, including its vaunted Haptic feedback system, designed specifically to help further immerse the player into their gaming experience. Rather than developing the same sort of all-inclusive cross-compatibility that Xbox will incorporate, Sony noted how it believed PlayStation 5 games should instead “take advantage of the new capabilities and features” in its next-generation controller.
Both consoles are currently scheduled to release this Holiday season, with Sony having revealed that PlayStation fans can expect a new State of Play on August 6. Meanwhile, Xbox’s Phil Spencer has assured Xbox gamers that there will befurther forthcoming informationon the Xbox Series X following its recent Xbox Games Showcase in July.
