Summary

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomis filled with over 100 side quests that players can complete as they explore Hyrule. Many of these side quests are extremely straightforward, tasking Link to kill specific monsters or take pictures of gorgeous scenery. However, because ofTears of the Kingdom’snon-linear nature, some quests unintentionally become trickier than intended, as players can find key locations long before triggering the quest itself. “Gerudo’s Colossal Fossil” is a particularly notable example of this.

The Great Skeletons are the remains of ancient leviathans found in three places around Hyrule: Eldin, Hebra, and the Gerudo Desert. InBreath of the Wild, one quest tasked Link to take pictures of the three skeletons. Now, inTears of the Kingdom, returning character Loone has developed a fascination with the leviathan bodies and wants to explore them with Link’s help. However, due to the nature ofTears of the Kingdom’snew cave system, players may encounter theGerudo Great Skeletonand discover its secrets long before triggering her quest.

The Gerudo Great Skeleton Now Hides In A Cave

InBreath of the Wild, the Gerudo Great Skeleton was located deep in the desert and was not easy to find, but it was above ground. Players could see it on the game’s map and travel directly to it. InTears of the Kingdom, due to the Upheaval event - or possibly just the gradual shifting of sands - the fossil is now covered up by a cave. It’s southwest of the Lightning Temple, a location players need to visit while completing the game’s main plot. Those hunting for cave-dwellingBubbulfrogsand their precious Bubbul Gems might also stumble across the skeleton.

Once inside the cave, players will find a wall of rock that can be destroyed using Bomb Flowers, hammer-type weapons, or theFire Sage Yunobo’s ability. Many players will destroy it on instinct, searching for some sort of treasure. However, the only thing inside the rock wall is a much smaller leviathan skeleton. This is a mysterious object with a purpose that will not be clear to players who have not started the “Gerudo’s Colossal Fossil” quest, leaving many puzzled.

Loone’s Fossil Quest Has Three Parts

Loone, the eager fossil explorer, is found nowhere near any of the three skeletons inTears of the Kingdom. She’s found at East Akkala Stable, and players who are not careful to speak to every NPC at each stable might miss her entirely. Loone asks players to travel to the Eldin Great Skeleton, where Link must find its missing eye. Then, they must repair the broken pieces of bone at theHebra Great Skeleton. The Gerudo Skeleton is visited last of the three, and only then can players put the miniature skeleton to good use by assembling it and showing it to her.

Although quite tricky, this quest is still definitely recommended for players to complete. Loone will reward Link with a total of 150 Rupees, a valuable reward in a game where money can be scarce. In addition, knowing the locations of the Great Skeletons can help players find another set of treasure. Each fossil has a corresponding Dark Skeleton right underneath it in the Depths, and these skeletons are home to treasure chests holding the three pieces of the “Armor of the Wild” set inspired byBreath of the Wild. The skeletons in the Depths are hard to find, so it is recommended that the players go for their surface counterparts first. Finally, both the Gerudo and Hebra skeletons are in caves, so players can earn two Bubbul Gems from Bubbulfrogs to exchange with the trader Koltin for even more rewards.
