The night elves inWorld of Warcrafthave endured much in the past few years. In the Battle for Azeroth expansion, they faced unimaginable loss and tragedy as Sylvanas Windrunner destroyed the Kal’dorei capital city within Teldrassil, the World Tree. Now,World of Warcraft’s desolated night elves might have a chance to regrow their home somewhere new.

World Trees inWorld of Warcraft’s universe are immense trees that touch the sky with their branches and dominate the horizon with their bulk. They are sacred to the night elves and are deeply connected to Azeroth and all nature. Teldrassil once stood on an island off the continent of Kalimdor, the night elf capital, Darnassus, nestled in its boughs. That was until the tree was set ablazeby the Horde, killing the World Treealong with everyone inside.

World of Warcraft’s Night Elves Have a New World Tree Seed After Shadowlands

DuringWorld of Warcraft: Shadowlands, players learned that the souls of those night elves that died in the fire made it to the Shadowlands. Once players had rescued those souls from the Maw, many of them decided that they wanted to help bring renewal to their people.Tyrande Whisperwind, the night elf matriarch, chose healing over vengeance against Sylvanas, and with the help of players, forged a new World Tree seed from the souls of those who had perished.

Tyrande brought the seed back to Azeroth, but players don’t know where or when it will be planted. There are other World Trees on Azeroth, but most are either dead or their magic has greatly waned. Nordrassil is perhaps the most important World Tree on Azeroth thus far, as it wasblessed by the Dragon Aspectsthemselves thousands of years ago and once gave the night elves their immortality. Archimonde the demon tried using Nordrassil’s power to conquer Azeroth inWarcraft 3, but he was destroyed by the night elf spirits protecting it.

With this in mind, it’s important to consider how powerful World Trees can really be. They must be placed somewhere safe from corruption, as World Trees in the past have proven particularly vulnerable to Old God magic. Shaladrassil, in the Broken Isles, was twisted by the Emerald Nightmare, and Vordrassil in Northrend had to be cut down toprevent the spread of Old God sickness. Even Teldrassil had to be carefully purified of foul magic before it burned down.

Theories abound about where the perfect spot would be, ranging from places both verdant and desolate. One theory is that the tree could be planted beneath the Sword of Sargeras, the enormousblade piercing Azeroth’s crust in Silithus. It’s likely that doing so would re-purpose the colossal sword, mending the wound it created in Azeroth and transforming it into a source of life instead of destruction.

However, the most likely place for Teldrassil’s replacement is the Dragon Isles. InWoW: Dragonflight, there is an in-depth quest line involving the Green Dragonflight restoring their power and unity as one flight. In doing so, Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage traded his life so Ysera could return from the Shadowlands.Ysera was the former Green Aspectand still has a deep connection to Azeroth’s life energies. She and her kin would be instrumental in growing and blessing a new World Tree.

The prime spot in the Dragon Isles is an empty space just west of the Ohn’ahran Plains, surrounded by islands that are rich with life energies. What’s more, theGreen Dragonflight’s base of operationsis right next door, meaning the tree would have plenty of guardians to nurture and protect it. Wherever Tyrande chooses to plant the precious World Tree seed, the gesture in itself will open a new chapter for the night elf race. It will mean that balance has been restored and that both wounds and hearts have begun to mend.
