Destiny 2’s Season of the Haunted is coming to an end one month from now, but players are now enjoying the newly reworked Solstice event for the remainder of the Season. The storyline of Season 17 explored the themes of trauma and healing for characters new and old, with centerpieces being Zavala, Caiatl, and Crow, each facing their Nightmare on the Leviathan in the wake of Calus' ascension as The Witness' new herald. This week, Bungie announced that at the end of Season of the Haunted and prior to the beginning of Season 18, the company will hold a specialDestiny 2showcase.
The topic of this showcase is clear: a teaser of the Lightfall expansion, and likely the themes of Season 18.Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness sagais coming to an end, but Bungie seemingly has plans for the franchise that go way beyond it, with years of content possibly planned ahead. Because nothing official is currently known about Lightfall, the upcoming showcase is going to be an interesting one, and if the showcase held last year for the reveal of The Witch Queen is something to go by, then players will have plenty to look forward to in the coming months.

Destiny 2’s Showcase and News About Lightfall
Last year,Bungie held aDestiny 2showcaseon August 24, a few hours prior to the release of Season of the Lost, during which many developers talked about the new expansion and Season. Aside from introductions and chats, the proper presentation started with a reassessment of the objectives for what the game should be and achieve, as well as how it has grown over the years. This is likely something that will be present in the showcase for this year, considering that many things have changed, and it’s possible that Bungie will briefly touch on the issues with developer harassment.
After the introductory bit, the most likely thing to happen is that two or more developers will present ashort trailer for Lightfall, most likely a teaser of what’s to come and what the main focus of the expansion will be. This is the same thing that Bungie did with The Witch Queen, but it’s possible that for Lightfall the trailer will be under two minutes, as there are still two Seasons to go before the expansion launches. A discussion about what the trailer shows will probably then ensue, with more developers chiming in on the themes ofDestiny 2’s newest expansion, talking about what this chapter entails for the franchise as a whole.

It’s also worth noting that Bungie did confirm that a new element was in the works, and Lightfall could be the perfect place to release a new Darkness subclass for Guardians to unlock. Much like the company shared footage of The Witch Queen’s pre-alpha stages to showcase some gameplay scenes, if a new element is indeed coming toDestiny 2, then this could very well be shown in a short video. This could also go more into the details surrounding Lightfall, who the big villain of the expansion is, andwhat sort of locations will become availablefor players to explore.
This could be a good time to also talk about what the Lightfall campaign is going to be like, and discuss what Bungie learned from the overwhelmingly positive reception of The Witch Queen campaign this year. In fact, in an interview from a few months ago, Bungie stated that The Witch Queen’sLegendary campaign allowedDestiny 2to find a happy mediumbetween hard content and casual content, which the company has yet to replicate elsewhere.

Possible Announceents About Season 18, Arc 3.0, and Matter
Considering that the whole showcase can’t possibly be about Lightfall exclusively, there are a few options to consider about what to expect. For starters, Bungie will probably share a trailer for Season 18 and theArc 3.0 update, unless details about those are planned for upcoming TWABs that precede the August showcase of this year. Again, last year, Bungie disclosed the first trailer for Season of the Lost only after talking about The Witch Queen, which would make sense to repeat as a formula due to howDestiny 2’s Season 18 is still nameless and wrapped in secrecy.
Another thing that players can expect from the showcase is adiscussion aboutDestiny 2weapon crafting, which is something that raised some concerns in Season of the Haunted due to the intensive grind that it entailed. This could also be a good time to tackle new weapons or Exotics, this time most likely not including a whole new weapon archetype, considering that glaives were released with The Witch Queen. Instead, adjustments to glaives and other weapons could be listed, alongside Bungie’s plans aboutDestiny 2’s current sandbox.
New Exotics and the Season 18 Exotic, specifically, are very likely to make the cut in the August showcase because of Bungie’s renewed focus on build-crafting, which is now one of the core aspects ofDestiny 2. This is reinforced by the treatment the Solstice event got this year, with it becoming the perfect way to farm for excellent armor pieces, even though this newfarming method favors mainly newDestiny 2playersrather than veterans. Talks about Festival of the Lost probably won’t be part of the showcase, as it’s too early for them.
Lastly, it’s not impossible that this showcase will also have a teaser trailer and the definitive announcement of Bungie’s non-Destiny 2-related upcoming project, which is currently known asMatter.Matterhas reportedly been in development for a long time now, and with the recentacquisition of Bungie by Sony, the stakes might be high enough for the company to finally reveal what this game is all about. Similarly, Bungie could seize the opportunity to talk about the new PvP-focused mobile game that is in the works, though it may be too soon for that. Clearly, Bungie fans have a lot to be excited about.
Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
