Since it was released earlier this month, the anticipated live-action adaptation of theUnchartedvideo game series has become one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. Although nothing has yet been announced, director Ruben Fleischer is already hoping for a sequel sometime in the future.

Unchartedfollows a young adventurer and treasure hunter named Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), who gets recruited by Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover the lost treasure that Ferdinand Magellan amassed during the Magellan expedition. However, our hero and his soon-to-be mentor are not the only ones after the loot: corrupt billionaire Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and his hired assassin (Tati Gabrielle) also want to get their hands on the treasure, and they’re not afraid to get rid of whoever gets in their way.

During an appearance on Deadline’sHero Nationpodcast, Fleischer, who previously directedZombielandand its 2019 sequel,as well as 2018’sVenom, revealed that he would like to return to the director’s chair for a follow-up toUncharted. “I can’t help but hope we’ll be doing a sequel,” he said. “I think Sony is appropriately superstitious, and they don’t plan things without knowing how they’ll be received.”

Unchartedfirst debuted internationally before appearing in domestic theaters on February 18, likely to avoid any Super Bowl-related distractions. AlthoughUnchartedreceived mixed reviews(the film currently scores 40% on Rotten Tomatoes), it performed well at the box office and garnered around $139 million worldwide in addition to its local proceeds. Therefore, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Sony decided to give a sequel the green light.

Another one of this year’s highest-grossing films that is getting another chapter after a successful run at the box office isScream, which was released in January.
