Even though the show is primarily based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, it also contains multiple references and Easter eggs aimed at the games. Most of the time, these are fairly small details that are easy to miss, but they’re sure to please all people who enjoyed both the games and the show.

7The Bruxa Who Liked Roses

The first antagonist Geralt faces in the second season is the bruxa Vereena. She lives with Geralt’s old friend Nivellen and hides from the witcher… until she stops hiding, which leads to a fight between Geralt and Vereena. In the end, Geralt wins and cuts Vereena’s head off. The name might be familiar to all players ofThe Witcher 3who finished the quest Skellige’s Most Wanted.

When the group of monsters faces Geralt and accuses him of killing other monsters, one of the names that they mention is Vereena. They call her the bruxa who liked roses. Geralt then says that Vereena was dangerous and had to die. Judging by her behavior in this episode, it seems that Geralt was unfortunately right in this case.

6Geralt Doesn’t Like Portals

When Geralt goes to see the mage Istredd to investigate the fallen monoliths together, he travels through a portal Triss had conjured up. Geralt’s initial plan is to travel to Cintra in a more grounded way, on horseback, but he changes his mind despite his disdain for traveling through portals.

This particular dislike of Geralt is something game players will be familiar, with as Geralt repeats multiple times in the games that he hates portals. Even when Yennefer offers to make a portal for Geralt so that he can get to Velen in the third game, he chooses to ride there instead, despite the fact that it significantly prolongs the journey.

5The Gaunter O’Dimm Parallel

Gaunter O’Dimm isone of the most frightening and powerful villains inThe Witcher 3. A demon, or perhaps the devil himself, O’Dimm fulfills people’s wishes — but they pay for it dearly. The demonic being Voleth Meir, who plays a major part in the second season of the Netflix show, looks like she was inspired by O’Dimm.

The similarities are clear. Both characters are demons who fulfill wishes, but usually turn it against the person who made the wish in the first place. And at the end of the story, they both return to their realms, which are different from the world in which Geralt, Ciri and the rest of the heroes reside.

4Yennefer’s Favorite Animal

For fans of Yennefer, of the most memorable scenes inThe Witcher 3is whenGeralt and Yennefer make a good use of Yennefer’s stuffed unicornin Skellige. While the unicorn itself doesn’t appear in the second season of the show, there’s a reference to it.

Yennefer mentions it during her conversation with Geralt and Ciri, saying that she used to own a stuffed unicorn before it broke. Of course, as all game players will know, Yennefer eventually managed to repair the unicorn, and she and Geralt got to use it again in the game.

3Familiar Swords

Many fans were looking forward to seeing Kaer Morhen, and Season Two didn’t disappoint. Ciri and Geralt spend a significant amount of time in the Witcher’s keep. At one point, Vesemir shows Ciri around the keep’s vault, and the viewers can see that it contains two swords, which look like the ones fromThe Witcher 3.

More specifically, the Viper sword and the steel sword that Geralt uses in the games both appear here. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but those who playedThe Witcher 3multiple times andput together the Viper setmight spot the swords nonetheless.

2The Witcher Medallion

Season two sees multiple characters die but one of the most surprising death is Eskel — especially since he survived in the games. Eskel becomes a monster when a leshen infects him, and causes Eskel’s transformation into one as well. Geralt is then forced to kill him to save Vesemir.

When Vesemir’s hanging Eskel’s medallion on the tree full of medallions of other dead Witchers, viewers can briefly see another very familiar-looking medallion. It looks exactly like the Wolf medallion Geralt wears around his neck all the time inThe Witcher 3— which, of course, helps him to detect monsters as well as magic.

1The Overly Friendly Rock Troll

Ciri has been through many difficult things, so when she mentions to Geralt during their journey to Kaer Morhen that she has nightmares, Geralt isn’t surprised. Instead of trying to console Ciri (and failing), he shares his own nightmare with her, and says it was about overly friendly rock trolls.

That could very well be a reference to the games, in which Geralt meets several annoyingly friendly rock trolls. One of them, for example, wants Geralt to sing Redanian marching tunes, while another one belongs to Dijkstra and attempts to lead a conversation with Geralt. However, he fails because of his limited vocabulary and general understanding.
