House Va’ruun is One of Starfield’s Greatest Mysteries
Out of all the civilizations inStarfield, House Va’ruun is known to be the third government established within the game’s world, and the nature of its formation raises more questions than answers. The theocracy is believed to have begun on a colony ship that had left New Atlantis sometime in 2190, eventually becoming lost, but this is still just a rumor and not known for certain as fact. Forty years later, the descendants of that vanished ship returned, introducing themselves to the Settled Systems as House Va’ruun, led by Jinan Va’ruun.
Rumors suggest that while enacting a grav jump, one of the passengers on the ship that disappeared had an experience with a being known as the Great Serpent. The passenger claimed that the Great Serpent gave the ship the ultimatum of either worshiping the deity or being destroyed when it eventually ends the universe. Jinan originally wanted to spread the word of the Great Serpent, but he decided to declare an unsuccessful war on the rest of the Settled Systems, eventually dying and being succeeded by his son Jarek. Following the aftermath of the war that destroyed the reputation of House Va’ruun, Jarek attempted peace with the rest of civilization, but this ultimately fell flat, and the remains of House Va’ruun withdrew into secrecy while some members turned to extremism, becoming Zealots. Even former memberslike potential companion Andrejadon’t know where the main group can be found.
There arefive main factions players can join inStarfield, but House Va’ruun is not one of them. Being able to join the theocracy would obviously help shed more light on the mysteries surrounding the group, but as of now, the faction remains in the shadows. Players can choose the Serpent’s Embrace trait while building their character, which gives their character the backstory of growing up worshiping the Great Serpent, but this unfortunately doesn’t provide any special information regarding the religion. Not even the location of the group’s planet Va’ruun’kai is known by its own agents, who are tasked with gathering intel on other factions.
All the mysteries surrounding this religious group make for one ofStarfield’smost compelling secrets, and there will hopefully be more information on House Va’ruun in the future. WithStarfieldreceiving such positive feedbackfrom both players and critics, there is likely to be future DLCs that can provide even more content on top of this jam-packed game, and a House Va’ruun DLC would be a great chance to finally get a glimpse into the world of one of the game’s most secretive groups.
