TheKillzonefranchise has not received a new game since 2013’sKillzone Shadow Fall, and unfortunately, it seems like this will not be changing anytime soon. A recentGuerrilla Games leakrevealed that the developer’s next game will be a shooter with an eSports focus, but it will not be set in theKillzoneuniverse. Further, the leak claims thatKillzoneis dead, with Guerrilla Games prioritizing this new IP and theHorizonfranchise.

While it is great thatHorizonis such a success and that Guerrilla is trying something new in the FPS genre, it is a shame thatKillzonehas completely died. Every entry in the series was good or great, and many gamers have fond memories ofKillzonemultiplayer. With an interesting story featuring sympathetic villains in the form of the Helghast, there are plenty of upsides toKillzone. As such, whether through a sequel or remasters,Killzonedeserves to live on.

The Case For a New Killzone Game

WithKillzone Shadow Fall’s multiplayeroverrun by hackers and basically unplayable, fans of the series desperately need a new online mode within theKillzoneuniverse. Further, the ending ofShadow Fall’s campaign set up an interesting sequel, so it is a shame that it will likely never be expanded upon. While the series never sold as well as it reviewed, nostalgia could help a new entry do well out the gate, with major innovations also bringingKillzoneto a larger audience.

The DualSense controlleris one of the biggest reasons that PlayStation shooters likeResistanceandKillzonedeserve to be revived. Games likeAstro’s Playroomhave demonstrated just how great the controller can be at making players feel different things, whileRatchet and Clank: Rift ApartandReturnalhave shown how adaptive triggers can provide different firing modes. A newKillzonegame could take advantage of this, providing more unique weapons while also letting players feel the impact of gory melee kills. TheKillzoneseries has always been visually stunning, too, and the power of the PS5 would surely be on full display in a newKillzonegame.

The Case For Killzone Remasters

Working against the idea of a newKillzonegame is the fact that Guerrilla has seemingly moved on to bigger and better things. While it could always pass the IP over to another member ofPlayStation Studios, allowing a different developer to build a newKillzonegame, an alternative is a remastered collection ofKillzonetitles. This would surely take less time and resources to make, but it would still allow the IP to live on instead of being abandoned.

Killzoneremasters could include some DualSense features and updated visuals, getting them more on par with today’s shooters. Even a small visual upgrade would be enough, as theKillzonegames still hold up pretty well. A remastered collection’s main goal would be to get more players intotheKillzoneseriesthrough an accessible, modern package, removing the annoying hackers that the original multiplayer modes are suffering from in the process.

A remastered collection ofKillzonegames would not only allow players to relive the hectic fights of Radec Academy fromKillzone 2, but it could also allow more players to try the excellentKillzone: Mercenary. By launching exclusively onPlayStation Vita, few gamers had the chance to try this well-crafted shooter. A version of the game could be a nice bonus for a remastered package, with the DualSense touchpad being used in place of the Vita exclusive’s touchscreen for melee finishers. Whether a revival happens through a new game or remasters, theKillzoneseries deserves so much better. Hopefully, Guerrilla Games brings it back soon or hands it off to another member of PlayStation Studios, as a great series likeKillzonehas no reason to go dormant.
