There are quite a few competitors in the Trading Card game field. Blizzard’sHearthstonehas found lots of success, and games likeMagic The GatheringandPokemonboth have dedicated fan bases for their respective card games. It makes sense, then, that some may fall out of style, which appears to be the case withThe Elder Scrolls: Legends, asthe card game based on Bethesda’s fantasy series has now been put on an indefinite hiatus.

In a community post on Reddit, Bethesda explained that it has decided “to put any new content development or releases on hold for the foreseeable future”. Previously, Bethesda had announced plans to releaseone more card pack before the end of the year, though that has now been scrapped completely. In fact, new expansions and other content are no longer in active development whatsoever, meaning the game will remain as it is now.Legends is, however, still downloadable and playable for those that are fine with the game in its current state. The Asia-specific version ofLegendsis also still being worked on, as development on that version is operated seperately.

Bethesda didn’t announce a specific reason for ending active development on the game, though it’s presumably because it simply didn’t garner enough of a player base to keep it going. The company currently has several other projects in development for the franchise, most NotablyElder Scrolls 6,which was announced at E3 2018. It’s unclear whether or not the team will be moved to work on those other projects instead.

Previously,Elder Scrolls Legendswas ported to consoles, presumably with the hope of injecting more life into its player base. It appears that move simply wasn’t enough, and the future of the game is now unclear. It’s possible that the game re-enters development at some point, if it’s able to miraculously attract new players, but that seems incredibly unlikely. The genre is pretty crowded considering how niche it is, and no new content being added is effectively a death sentence. Still, one can hope that new content will be added at some point for any hold outs.

It’ll be interesting to see if Bethesda’s other mobileElder Scrollsgame,Blades, suffers the same fate.Bladesis slated to release on consolesbut was recently delayed without a solid release date. Time will tell whether the project is able to sink or swim, but at least fans of the franchise still haveElder Scrolls 6and new content forElder Scrolls Onlineto look forward to.

The Elder Scrolls: Legendsis available for Mobile, PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
