One year later,Super Smash Bros Ultimateremains a relevant and highly played Nintendo Switch title. A major factor for keeping the game relevant is due in large part to its DLC, which has added plenty of variety to the game thanks tounique and interesting third party characterslike Terry Bogard and Banjo-Kazooie. One character in particular, Hero from theDragon Questseries has really shaken things up due to his unique moveset, though there was a time when this collaboration almost didn’t happen at all.
In the most recent issue of Nintendo Dream magazine,Dragon Quest XIproducer Hokuto Okamoto, director Takeshi Uchikawa and development director Masato Yagi discuss the characters inclusion to the popular fighting game. Shockingly, they revealed that their first impression was more surprise than anything else that Hero was being added toSuper Smash Bros Ultimate.The main reason is that it’s typically impossible forDragon Questcharacters to appear in other companies' games.

However, to alleviate the difficulty, Mr. Sakurai, a known workaholic, made sure to keep both Square Enix and Nintendo happy during this process. One such idea from Square Enix was to have each color variant of the character actuallybe a hero from one of the past games. Mr. Okamoto even reveals that Sakurai was heavily involved in the audio recordings for the character as well, teaming up to work on the cues and deciding which lines would ultimately be used.
The work from Sakurai and the development team constantly surprised theDragon Questteam. Uchikawa admits that he was personally impressed withthe scale of theDragon Queststageas well as how the command selection was able to be incorporated into the Hero’s move set. Overall, the team was thrilled to be involved with a cross-over like this, something that isn’t normal for theDragon Questfranchise.
For now, fans continue to wait for the fifth character reveal. While many believed the announcement would be made at The Game Awards last December, but the event came and went without a word. Nintendo has yet to tease any sort of announcement, so for now, rumors continue to run wild on the internet. Thelatest rumor indicates that Capcom will be the next companyto be featured, though instead of an obvious choice like a character fromResident Evil,Devil May Cry, or another action franchise, it’ll be Phoenix Wright. However, other rumors have run the gamut of possible additions including Waluigi, anOverwatchcharacter, Ryu Hayabusa, Gordon Freeman, and many more.
