While every weapon inStarfieldis perfectly serviceable out of the box, installing mods can make them significantly more effective in almost every situation. However, modding does come at a cost, and the best add-ons aren’t accessible until players decide to invest a lot of time and effort into them.

Weapon modding inStarfieldis very similar to the one inFallout 4,albeit with a few caveats. Veterans of the latter should have no issue fiddling with their guns here, but for those who are playing their first Bethesda game or are simply in need of a refresher, this guide will help with all the basics involved in creating and installing weapon mods.
How to Mod Weapons in Starfield
The first thing players need to do is find a Weapon Workbench. These can typically be foundin gun stores and armories. The Lodge has one in the basement, along with copies of every other workbench in the game, making it an excellent one-stop workshop. If needed, players can also install a workshop module aboard their ship so they have crafting tables at the ready anywhere they go.
Interacting with a Weapon Workbench opens up the modding screen, which shows all the available guns in the player’s inventory. Selecting one of them displays all moddable weapon parts as well as the craftable mod pieces themselves. To install a weapon mod, click on any of the options available on the screen and press the corresponding Install button shown on the right side.

All resource costs are shown on the upper right of the crafting screen, and players can track these so they can have an easier time finding them while exploring. A magnifying glass icon will show up next to the names of all tracked resources.
The majority of weapon mods are locked behind research projects. To unlock them, players must visit any Research Station and spend the appropriate resources as listed in the Weapons projects list.

Take note that advanced weapon projects require the investment ofadditional points into the Weapon Engineering skillunder the Science tree. Not only do players need to have enough skill points, but they also need to craft enough weapon mods in order to unlock the advanced tiers of the skill. This is not retroactive, so make sure to only craft mods after ranking the Weapons Engineering skill up so as not to waste any precious materials.
Starfieldis available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
