At PlayStation’s State of Play June 2022 event, Capcom announcedResident Evil 4 Remake. Resident Evil 4 Remakewill attempt to do for the 2005 game what the remakes ofResident Evil 2 & 3did for their respective releases – bring the game into the current generation with updated graphics, mechanics, and storylines. The newRE 4 Remaketrailerwas filled with hints and secrets ofwhat those updates could be,and many of them were so well-hidden that only the most perceptive of fans will have spotted them.

10Leon Meets With The President

This scene, which sees Leon Kennedy meeting with the President of the United States, was not in the original game. Although Leon’s mission inResident Evil 4is to locate the President’s kidnaped daughter, players never see the initial meeting between the two. This is in line with Capcom’s remakes ofResident Evil 2 & 3, which also contained new cutscenes whichfleshed out the narrativeof the original games.

It’s also worth noting that, inResident Evil 6, Leon agrees to take on a role as the President’s bodyguard. There is a striking resemblance between the President inResident Evil 6and the one we see in this new trailer.

9Lord Saddler’s Tentacles

Toward the end of the trailer, there is a brief glimpse ofResident Evil 4’smain villain, Lord Osmund Saddler. Sporting a large hood that obscures his face, he is still unmistakable due to his iconic staff and long dark robes.

However, as Lord Saddler reaches toward the screen just before the title card, tentacles erupt from his hand. While tentacles were a part ofSaddler’s menacing personain the 2005 release, they only emerged from his staff. This blink-and-you’ll-miss-it image suggests yet another departure from the original game’s design of the character, and will likely influence the mechanics of the eventual showdown between Leon and the leader of the Los Iluminados cult.

8Ashley On The Run

Following the scene with Leon and the President, the trailer shows the latter’s daughter, Ashley, on the run in the woods outside the unnamed Spanish town in which the game takes place. This is another new scene that was not present in the originalResident Evil 4.

While Ashley is a playable character in the 2005 version, she doesn’t appear in the gameuntil Leon connects with herat the midway point of the story. This scene appears to take place well before that and suggests that in the remake players will take on the role of Ashley much earlier on in her journey.

7Leon’s First Encounter With Las Plagas

InResident Evil 4, Leon is attacked when he enters an isolated cabin in the woods by a local with a hatchet who is infected with Las Plagas, the Spanish name for this game’s particular strain of the T-Virus.

This shot appears to include the same cabin where Leon is attacked. Viewers even see a hatchet buried in a tree stump out front. However, in the original game, this event took place during the day, and here Leon appears to be arriving at night. This could just be an aesthetic change for this scene, or it could affect the sequence of events of the entire game.

6Luis Sera, Spanish Police

This image shows the updated Luis Sera, a former Spanish police officer who was investigating Los Iluminados and is captured alongside Leon by the village chief, Bitores Mendez. Viewers also see in this shot the game’s first confirmedreturning weapon, the Red9.

It also seems to be Luis who is the narrator in most of this trailer, although it is not the original voice actor who portrayed him saying the lines. The dialogue spoken by him is also new, either recorded exclusively for this trailer or included in the game itself. While Luis and Leon eventually go their separate ways, this narration suggests that the former will also have an expanded role in the new game.

5Bitores Mendez, Tyrant?

For a brief moment, the trailer shows a hulking figure standing down a long hallway. This is almost certainly the aforementioned village chief, Bitores Mendez.

However, hisoutfit has been fully updatedfrom his original look in the 2005 game. The wide-brim hat and robes are reminiscent of a particular character from another recent remake,Resident Evil 2. The hat is almost identical to what is worn by Mr. X, who is infected with a variation of the T-Virus called T-00. This may suggest that the battle with Mendez will be expanded beyond a single encounter, and will have him stalking Leon throughout the game’s early levels in the same way Mr. X did inResident Evil 2.

4Hello Ada Wong

Fans also catch a quick glimpse of a character that, while her face is not revealed, is almost certainly the spy known as Ada Wong.

Her outfit appears to have been updated for a more tasteful look than the scant red dress she wears in the 2005 version, but the primary color remains the same, a deep wine red. Her hair color and shape, as well as the pistol holster she wears across her back, all remain as iconic elements of the character’s design.

3Leon Hunted By Del Lago

Here Leon is curled up in the bottom of a rickety motorboat. The protagonist being in a boat can only mean one thing: this image refers to the battle with Del Lago.

Del Lago is a massive fish-like monster who acts asthe first boss fightinResident Evil 4. It is also unique in that it is the only boss in the game that is fought by throwing spears as opposed to using guns. This shot could take place after the fight is over, but could also be Leon hiding from the great fish. After all, Del Lago likes to disappear beneath the water’s surface after it takes some damage.

2Leon Infected

The trailer provides a quick glimpse of Leon struggling with a virus infection, after being captured and injected with Las Plagasby Bitores Mendez in the village.

This scene is likely to be the same as the one which takes place prior to the fight with Del Lago in the classic game. In the original, Leon has a moment of panic as he feels the virus progressing through his system, although once again that scene takes place during the day, whereas this appears to be happening at night.

1Resident Evil: Village Connections

Lastly, the trailer reveals this symbol carved into stone as blood drips down from an unknown source. While this is the symbol for the Los Iluminados cult, this scene does not appear in the original game.

What’s interesting is that it bears a striking resemblance to the symbols displayed onthe Four-Winged GatesinResident Evil: Village. There are a lot of thematic similarities betweenResident Evil 4andResident Evil: Village, and this shot may suggest that the stories will be more directly connected in the new remake then they had been previously.
