Screamhas some promising box office projections coming its way for opening weekend. So much so, that the film is expected to beat outSpider-Man: No Way Homefrom it’s current number one slot. Many Marvel fans may find this news shocking, especially sinceSpider-Man: No Way Homemarks the end of an era in many ways.

Spider-Man: No Way Homealso really honed in on the level of nostalgia that fans had been craving by finally featuring all three live-action versions Spider-Man co-existing at once on the big screen. However, big fans of theScreamfranchise might argue that the same sense of nostalgia is present here as well, and its banking at the box office.

Per Deadline,Screamis expected to bring in around $20 million-plus solely in its opening weekend over the four-day MLK holiday.Spider-Man: No Way Homehas been on quite the winning streak since it’s release in December of 2021. IfScreamdoes meet the expected projections for opening weekend, it will become the first movie to defeatSpider-Man: No Way Home’s number one spotfor four consecutive weeks in a row.

Although the title,Scream, almost suggests that it’s one of the first films, it’s actually the fifthfilm in theScreamseries. The title for the fifth film pays a nostalgic-rendering homage to the first movie in the franchise, directed by Wes Craven back in 1996. Sadly, Craven is not here today to finish what he started, although the intent was clearly there. Craven returned to the director’s chair forScream 2-4but ended up passing away four years afterScream 4was made.

Carrying on the legacy ofScreamare directors Tyler Gillett and Matt-Bettinelli-Olpin, who are both most known for their 2019 horror-comedyReady or Not.TheScreammoviesstill stand as some of the most iconic horror films to this day despite more modern thriller films being made regularly. The first threeScreamflicks are among the top highest-grossing slasher movies of all time. AlthoughScream 4brought in significantly less viewers than the previous films, the franchise has the horror lane at the theater locked down.

Due to the pandemic, the movie theater industry is still struggling to recover. A lot of the select films that are being shown in theaters currently are either from the MCU and Disney, or they are part oflong-standing franchises such asGhostbusters: Afterlife. It’s clear from the box office records thus far, and from the types of movies that are consistently being made, that viewers are yearning for a trip down memory lane from their childhood. TheScreamfranchise possesses that sentimental feeling while also bringing in a sense of excitement due to the terrifying nature of it’s spooky content.

Screamwill be in theaters on January 14th, 2022.
