I’m sure in a few years time I’ll be able to go, ‘Wow, there are all of these themes and subjects…’ The other day someone asked Jonathan and I to describe the film and both of us sat there and were like, ‘Next’.”
How Does Under The Skin End?
Under the Skinhas a very dark and disturbing ending, which is exactly the point. The alien meets a man and spends time at his house, watching TV and eating food. She finds herself outside in a forest and realizes she is being assaulted. She takes her skin off, which is a visually arresting scene, and the man lights her on fire by pouring fuel on her.
It’s the kind of scene that is hard to watch and even tougher to forget. And that’s definitely on purpose. While this is a heartbreaking way to end the movie, it’s hard to see thissci-fi movie having a different ending. The story seems to come to its natural finish as the alien realizes that there is evil in the world that they can’t escape. When Johansson’s character removes her skin, it’s shocking and yet somehow exactly right. She is taking off what people see and exposing the real her, and its an apt and clever metaphor.
