Pokemon GO’sLunar New Year event is currently underway and trainers have a handful of exciting features and bonuses to take advantage of. In addition to anincrease in sightings of red Pokemonaround the game, the event is also temporarily increasing the odds of triggering a Lucky Trade.

Lucky Trades are incredibly valuable inPokemon GO, since they offer players the chance to gain a Pokemon that can be powered up at a 50% discount. Over time, that saves players a ton of Stardust if they use their resources wisely. Strategically planning Lucky Trades is a great way to decrease the cost of powering up a strong roster of Battle Raid options, so players won’t want to miss out on this opportunity.

As part of the in-gameLunar New Year festivities, Niantic hinted that it would be easier to become Lucky Friends during the event. Once players are Lucky Friends with someone, their next trade will be a guaranteed Lucky Trade. In addition to that, the odds of triggering a Lucky Trade without Lucky Friends is also supposed to be increased.

During the first day of the event players were reporting that Lucky Trades were only triggering at about a 5% rate. This is pretty low and doesn’t really represent much of a bonus at all. Luckily, day two reveals some new data that seems much more appropriate…

“Researchers have completed 993 trades of new Pokémon during the second 24 hours of the event. Of these trades, 94 became lucky. This is an average probability of 9.5%, with a 99% confidence interval of 7.2% – 12.0%. These data are significantly different from trades completed during the first 24 hours of the event (Chi-squared test, p-value = 2.9e-5).”

That means that Lucky Trade odds are just about doubled now that they are up to 9.5%. This is great news for trainers and seems to make the event activities a lot more worthwhile. Trainers should try to plan ahead for their trades and identify whichmeta-relevant powerful Pokemonthey are willing to give up and which ones they are looking for.

For now, players may want to keep hunting downthe best Unova Pokemon in the gameif improving their Battle Raid rosters is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for morePokemon GOstrategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
