Pokemonfan ExplosiveBarrelArt shared beautiful yet terrifying drawings they made of the Bulbasaur and Squirtle evolution lines. They shared their take on a uniqueSquirtle evolution line, which heavily draws upon the works of H. P. Lovecraft for inspiration. The idea behind the designs focuses on what would happen if Squirtle read the Necronomicon, and the results are something straight out of Innsmouth. Squirtle stands, mouth agape, revealing shark-like teeth, as fins protrude from the side of its neck. The scutes of its shell are disjointed and overlapping, while massive claws and a mace-like tail add to the monstrous appearance. Wartortle is even more grotesque, taking on a profound fish appearance, complete with bulbous eyes, a narrowed skull, and flowing fins. The most eldritch of the three is Blastoise, who appears as a massive Lovecraftian horror to rival Cthulu. With barnacled growths and exposed gills, this final evolution of Squirtle is a true monster.

After the incredibly popular community response to the Squirtle series, ExplosiveBarrelArt continued with their version of aBulbasaur evolution line. Unlike the Lovecraftian origins of the Water-type starter, Bulbasaur’s twisted depiction appears to have come from a toxic prehistoric jungle. The typically cute face of Bulbasaur is warped into a fleshy, trypophobia-inducing nightmare, while the bulb on its back bears horrific teeth and a tongue-like tentacle. Ivysaur has an even more terrifying face, which has been split open to reveal a dual-hinged insect jaw filled with vicious teeth. Hundreds of beady red eyes peer out from the leafy overgrowth upon its face and back, as a slimy egg sack protrudes from its belly. Fully embracing the art of horror is the final evolution, as Venusaur’s entire back has been ripped open to raise up the fanged flower of flesh grown from its deformed bulb.

FellowPokemonfans responded with praise and applause for the spectacular Halloween evolutions. Many complimented the intricate designs and their demented details, while others appreciated the pocket monsters being depicted as truly monstrous.
