The announcement of a brand newMarvel’s Spider-Mangame on PS5 has made a lot of PlayStation gamers happy.Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moralesreleases this holiday, starring the protagonist of the recent cartoon filmSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The introduction of Miles Morales as the new standalone game’s protagonist has some fans worrying what that means for Peter Parker, the original game’sSpider-Man. Recently, Insomniac reassured fans that Peter Parker is just fine.
In a thoughtful writeup from the creative director ofMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Brian Horton touched on the topic. Horton says to fans worried about Peter Parker’s fate, “Don’t worry.” He goes on to explain that Insomniac still has plans for Parker, with much of his story left to tell. Whether that means Peter Parker will return inSpider-Man 2or in some other capacity isn’t clear, but can probably be assumed.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, however, is all about the man himself. Horton says that the new game is “all about Miles” and describes his story as a “critical part of our Spider-Man universe.” That hopefully means that Miles will continue getting games alongsidePeter Parkergoing forward, as opposed to just becoming a side-character in Peter Parker’s games.
It’s also significant for Insomniac to make clear how important Miles is to the studio and the franchise for other reasons. Some haven’t been impressed thatInsomniacdecided to make Miles' story a spin-off from the main game, even if it is standalone and visually upgraded for the PS5, it’s still notMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. It’s good that Insomniac is willing to talk about its aspirations for Miles, even if it can’t provide specifics.
Spider-Manfans were worried for Peter Parker with good reason. In the comics, Miles becomesSpider-Manafter something happens to Peter Parker, though this is in the alternate Ultimate universe and not themainSpider-Manuniverse. Miles suddenly becoming the protagonist of the newSpider-Mangame implies that something similar could happen to Peter Parker here. And even though Peter Parker may come back later, he might still be in danger in the immediate.
To find out what’s happened to both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, fans will have to buy aPS5and experienceMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moralesfor themselves.
