The ongoing displays at 2021’s virtual CES look incredible. Nvidia, however, is shooting for the top gaming announcement with the reveal of theGeForce RTX 30 Series Laptops. These gaming laptops promise to bring high-end PC gaming to more general audiences through lightweight laptops that measure up to and push beyond the scope ofSony’s PlayStation 5 console.
Nvidiais well known for its graphics cards, recently introducing the RTX 30-series cards, which boast enough power to take PC gaming to new heights – like higher framerates and raytracing capabilities. However, the company has also been in the market of shipping full computer builds, from large desktop rigs to laptops that can even act like consoles.

In the official announcement for the RTX 30-series Laptops, Nvidia Senior VP Jeff Fisher stated that the RTX 3060 laptop is 30% faster than the PS5. Considering thatPS5 load times are 100 times faster than PS4 load timesaccording to Sony, getting an extra 30% increase from a laptop is an impressive leap. There is still a give and take between the two, though, as the RTX 3060 laptop will have a starting price of $999, double the price of Sony’s next-gen, standard disc version PlayStation 5 console.
Beyond the comparison to the PS5, the RTX 3060 laptop has a number of features that make it an attractive purchase for players looking to jump into the PC market. The laptop can be used as a console with television screens and other monitors, and can even attach external keyboards to essentially work like any normal desktop rig, with the added benefit of mobility when needed. On top of these features, the new line of laptops has been built to optimize the performance ofNvidia’s Graphics Cards, delivering dynamic framerates even on the most demanding titles, like controversial but financially successfulCyberpunk 2077.
Looking at the versatility of the RTX 30-series laptops, it may be a solid choice for anyone in the market for a new laptop in general, not just those specifically looking for gaming. Also, withNvidia’s RTX 30 Series GPUs seeing price increasesrecently, this new laptop series could be a much more affordable way to get a comparable experience at a more reasonable budget. It’s still a bit of a toss-up for those now juggling the RTX 3060 Laptop over a PS5, thanks to exclusive games, but Nvidia is definitely giving Sony a run for its money with this new product line.
