The long wait for season 2 ofThe Witcheris finally at an end, giving eager fans a much welcome release after an entire year of anticipation. If the previews are any indication, the new season promises plenty of the same action and drama that instantly drew viewers in, and a newly-released clip showcases a perfect example of the latter.
To commemorate this week’s premiere of season 2, the official YouTube channel of Netflix’sThe Witcheroffered up a small scene that may ring familiar to any fans who just completed their obligatory rewatch of the first season. Featuring Anya Chalotra asthe powerful sorceress Yennefer of Vengerbergand MyAnna Buring as her colleague and former mentor Tissaia de Vries, the two reference the battle seen at the end of season 1. But while things seem to have turned out in their favor, things aren’t exactly peachy between the duo of magic users.

Tissaia begins by cutting off Yennefer as her one-time pupil is about to say something important. The elder sorceress then praises her for her actions during the Battle of Sodden Hill, only to employ the “compliment sandwich” technique of team building by following up her encouraging words with something a bit less welcome. Tissaia then tells Yennefer that they need to let Mahesh Jadu’s handsome sorcerer Vilgefortz act as the one responsible for their victory.Yennefer quickly surmisesthat this appears to be part of a political strategy by both Vilgefortz and Tissaia, before Tissaia brings out the compliment sandwich once again (clever) and the two of them share a hug.
Given howThe Witcherseems to be going for more linear routewith its timeline in season 2, it seems likely that this scene will take place sometime in the first few episodes. After all, the Battle of Sodden Hill was a big moment at the end of season 1, and Yennefer’s ultimate fate afterward was treated as a mystery (at least, for those unfamiliar with the books or games). Tissaia pushed her to unleash her full power, so it will be interesting to see how Yennefer develops as a sorceress and a character after using such incredible magic.
The Battle of Sodden Hill was a bloody affair, eventually ending in a victory for the Northern Kingdoms, though not without sacrifice. Many died in the defense, with Anna Shaffer’s Triss Merigold assumed by many to be among those killed. So odds are there will be many branching storylines and character arcs in the aftermath of the conflict.
