Multiple games were announced today at Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase,includingState of Decay 3from developer Undead Labs. But perhaps one of the most exciting announcements is the next single-player RPGAvowedfrom the acclaimed studio Obsidian Entertainment.
Obsidian has been around for a very long time. The studio began as a collective of developers who left Black Isle Studios, the creators of the originalFalloutandFallout 2, before its closure. Obsidian then went on to make the sequel to BioWare’s belovedStar Wars Knights of the Republic.The studio made it big when it released the incredibly well-receivedFallout: New Vegas. Obisdian’s success continued withSouth Park: The Stick of Truth, and last year’sThe Outer Worlds.

But today, Obsidian announced its next RPG, a new game calledAvowed. According to the game’s new website,Avowedis, “Obsidian Entertainment’s next epic, first-person RPG set in the fantasy world of Eora.” Eora is the world in which thePillars of Eternityseries takes place, another franchise Obsidian has created inits very busy history.Pillars ofEternity’s first release was in 2015, with its sequelPillars of Eternity 2: Deadfirereleasing in 2018.
Not much is known about the game as the trailer was rather short, but it opens on war being waged with a narrator speaking of how the world of Eora has always known war. The narrator then asks the viewer to, “face the monsters our sins have born,” and asks, “is an oath worth the weight of a crown?” The trailer briefly shows the assumed protagonist taking up a sword and wielding a spell before cutting to the title ofAvowed.
Obsidian has been keeping extra busy, as this the only game Obsidian showed today. The studio also showeda new trailer forGrounded, a first-person multiplayer survival-adventure game that looks to be a mix ofFortnite,Left 4 Dead, andHoney, I Shrunk the Kids.
Obsidian also announced a new expansion forThe Outer Wilds, dubbedThe Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgonwhich will be coming to Xbox Series X as well as Xbox One, PC, and PS4.
