While the recentPokémon/Digimonmodmay have been a cool novelty, it isn’t exactly a replacement for a full-fledgedDigimonRPG.Digimonfans are still going to have to wait a while for the next major videogame,Digimon Survive, due to it being delayed to next year, but publisher Bandai Namco has shared a handful of new images for said fans to fawn over for the time being.
The images were first shared via Japanese sitePlayGame, and then posted on the Twitter account Digimon Tweets. The images don’t reveal an awful lot, especially since the text is still in Japanese, but we can glean a couple of details from them.

Most of theDigimonfeatured in the images are quite well known amongst even casual fans, but one in particular stands out - the red wolf-looking creature named Fangmon. Described as being the Digimon equivalent of the Big Bad Wolf, it lurks in forests and is said to disguise itself so as to lure in prey. Fangmon has made very little appearances in the franchise (apparently not even showing up in any of the anime series) so it being in a new videogame is certainly a surprise, and could suggest that other, obscure Digimon could appear as well.
We also get a good look at the world map, which seems to be available on the main character’s phone, and more dialogue scenes which look like they’ve been taken out of an anime. A couple of them are set at night as well, which could potentially hint towards a day/night cycle, but it’s equally possible that the time of day only ever changes during certain story beats.

These images follow thenew story detailsthat were revealed in an issue of Weekly Famitsu, which gave more detailed descriptions of the game’s main characters, explained how the story will start, and clarified that this game will have more of a serious edge to it, with multiple endings and potential character deaths being confirmed.
Digimon Survivehas been described as a mash-up of tactical RPGs and adventure games, with it being split into two parts. The “drama part” will function like an old-school text adventure, where the player’s dialogue choices will affect the story. These choices will also influence the “battle” part, altering the conditions of fights as the player moves Digimon across a field and Digivolves them so they become stronger (here’s hopingsome of these powerful Digimonwill be available too).

AnyDigimonfans eager to have something to play until wheneverDigimon Survivecomes out can get hold ofDigimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition, which combines two incredibly meaty RPGs together into one package that we can heartily recommend.
Digimon Surviveis scheduled to release in 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
