For a long time,Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s contents were shrouded in mystery. The original trailer gave fans a good glimpse of its 3D world, as well as the game’s mysterious post-apocalyptic landscape, but it didn’t put the spotlight on Kirby’s friends. Things are getting a little clearer thanks to new trailers forKirby and the Forgotten Land.Fans now know that Bandana Waddle Dee will play a central role in the game’s multiplayer, and King Dedede will likely return as an antagonist. However, one crucial character is left mysterious: Meta Knight.
Meta Knight has a somewhat complicated role in theKirbyseries. Like King Dedede, he isn’t a particularly villainous character, but he often acts as an antagonist when Kirby misunderstands his intentions - or whena trueKirbyvillaintakes control of him. When he’s not acting as a villain, Meta Knight has a reputation of working together with Kirby. Meta Knight could plausibly fill either role inKirby and the Forgotten Land, especially because of his single appearance in a trailer so far which suggests that Kirby might fight him under some unique circumstances.

Meta Knight in the Forgotten Land
In January, Nintendo released a new trailer forKirby and the Forgotten Landthat showcased the game’s co-op multiplayer, as well as a couple ofKirby’s new and returning Copy Abilities. At the end of the trailer, Sword Kirby finds himself in an arena filled with spectating Waddle Dees; Meta Knight swoops down from the sky, and the two begin to clash. The arena in question is likely the same one that players can build in Waddle Dee Town, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Kirby is fighting Meta Knight in a friendly duel. Meta Knight could be acting as an interloper.
The mystery around Meta Knight is particularly significant since Nintendo has given pretty clear roles toKirby’s other recurring characters. The latestForgotten Landtrailer heavily implies King Dedede has become affiliated with the Beast Pack somehow, meaning he’ll probably serve as an antagonist for at least a little while. Meanwhile, Bandana Waddle Dee is at the heart ofKirby and the Forgotten Land’s co-op. Considering how clear Bandana Dee and King Dedede’s roles are, and how little time remains before the game’s release, it’s a surprising that Nintendo hasn’t given fans more insight into Meta Knight.

Kirbyprecedent creates a huge variety of ways that Meta Knight could get involved inKirby and the Forgotten Land’s plot. Meta Knight and Kirby’s battle could be a friendly encounter;Forgotten Landplayers might get to spar with Meta Knight in the arena to earn rewards and master the game’s combat system. He could also serve as some kind of antagonist, whether he and Kirby mistakenly think the other is working with the Beast Pack, or whether Meta Knight becomes enthralled by the Beast Pack somehow. HAL Laboratory has integrated Meta Knight intoKirbygames in lots of creative ways before, so there’s little doubt that it will do so again.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo and HAL want to keep Meta Knight’s role a mystery on purpose. After all,Kirby and the Forgotten Landwouldn’t be nearly as interesting if every character’s role was public knowledge going in. For that reason, the mystery of Meta Knight might be one worth savoring until players actually get their hands onKirby and the Forgotten Land. The game once suggested that Kirby might be completely alone, so to many it’s probably a relief thatKirby’s friends will appear inForgotten Landin their own ways.
