Most missions in the video game world are satisfied by accomplishing the stated goals. A select few, like UNC: Major Kyle inMass Effect: Legendary Edition, are accomplished by not failing them. And there are many, many ways that this mission can be failed. It’s one of the most botched missions in the game because there are several points where everything can go wrong.

And that’s really too bad, because succeeding at this mission helps out a lot of biotics and carries implications for players who watch the news inMass Effect 2andMass Effect 3. The world is a better place when biotics aren’t in crippling pain because of L2 implants or ostracized by the rest of the galaxy and carefully getting to victory in this mission goes a long way in making that dream a reality.

Finding The Facility

After getting control of the Normandy,go to the Hawking Eta cluster and head to the Century system. Before being able to scan and survey any celestial bodies, Admiral Hackett will radio in and give Shepard the mission, UNC: Major Kyle.

Kyle himself is on the moon of Presrop, his compound is marked by an ‘x’ to the southeast. There are actually two facilities at this location, but only one can be accessed at this time.

Before going further, make sure to have Shepard’s paragon or renegade skill fairly high. This fight can easily end in bloodshed even when executed perfectly.

Going In The Correct Order

Start with the above-ground facility first. When getting to the door, a voice will come over the intercom. They will not allow access to Major Kyle(who they now call “Father Kyle”)unless they can be convinced with a paragon or renegade interaction.

It’s alright to go into this building before going into the underground building, butdo not fire any shots, throw any grenades, or do anything that could be conceived as violenteven if targeting a container or wall. Doing so will automatically make all of the biotics unfriendly and it will be impossible to resolve the situation peacefully.

Afterward,go to the newly unlocked underground bunker. Pass through to the back of the facility and speak to Major Kyle himself. Use either the paragon or renegade option and he will turn himself in.

Yet even after executing everything perfectly, there is a dialogue choice here that has a correct option that is not labeled with paragon or renegade persuasion options. When Major Kyle asks for one hour with the biotics (his “children”) before he surrenders,Shepard must say, “I believe you.“If any other dialogue choice is selected, violence will break out and the biotics will have to be put down.

To complete this mission, simplygo back to the Galaxy Map in the Normandy. Admiral Hackett will explain that he can’t believe the situation was resolved without incident. Indeed, this mission is so easy to get wrong that the game seems to expect a failure.
