Viewers of the franchise are equally obsessed as the delvers themselves when it comes to the mystery of the abyss. As each layer is essentially a world in itself, there are multiple terrors residing in each layer and strange effectsbrought on by the curse,it’s time to determine which layer is the most terrifying of them all.

71st Layer: Edge Of The Abyss

A largely ‘harmless’ level, this is the first level viewers are introduced to as the series begins. Located beneath the town of Orth, it is a place where all whistle ranks can safely traverse as there are typically no dangerous creatures that inhabit the region. However, sometimes creatures from the levels below may journey to this region, as seen when Riko first encounters Reg during her encounter with a crimson splitjaw.

The edge of the abyss is mostly serene and familiar as the biome is home to rivers and lush vegetation. However, the region is also home to a mass number of graves that contain praying skeletons. One can only speculate the nature and reason as to why the skeletons are in such a position as the oldest of them are thought to be more than 6000 years old.

63rd Layer: The Great Fault

From here on out, things get more terrifying. The great fault is essentially a 4km vertical cliff that houses many dangerous creatures including the crimson splitjaw. Due to the difficulty in navigating, divers instead use the cave networks that surround the main shaft. However, tunneling through the shafts can be extremely difficult due to the effects of vertigo and hallucinations caused by the curse of the abyss.

Viewers who fear large carnivorous creatures as well as having to crawl in through tight dark places will find the great fault more than just a little uncomfortable.

52nd Layer: The Forest Of Temptation

This layer belongs here for several reasons. First, the forest of temptation is the beginning where delvers finally understand the true dangers and horrors of the abyss. The environment changes into a large, sprawling rainforest with dangerous flora and fauna. Here delvers will experience nausea and joint pains upon their ascension, which can be difficult. This brings us to the next dangerous thing, the Corpse-Weepers.

These insidious avian creatures can master their prey’s cries for help and mimic them, luring in more potential sources of food. Although they can be domesticated, the idea that this region that is familiar to delvers can also become a death trap should an unwary delver be caught off guard by a flock of corpse-weepers. There is also the inverted forest that can be quite hard to traverse, and although an observation camp exists for delvers to rest at, delvers would have to meet and encounter the creepy and legendary White Whistle, the Immovable Sovereign,Ozen.

44th Layer: The Goblets Of Giants

A humid jungle comprised of goblet-like plants called Flat-Creepers, the 4th layer is a region known for death and its beauty. Vines criss-cross the misty landscape as deadly creatures roam the terrain. Only the most skilled delvers can access this region and even so, few will be lucky enough to get back to the 3rd layer. The area is also home to the infamous Orb Piercer, intelligent porcupine-like creatures that are large and extremely territorial. These creatures house a lethal poison in their many needles and are known to have killed hundreds of Black whistle delvers over the years.

Moreover, otherhorrific creaturessuch as the Amaranthine-deceptors have infiltrated and spread to his region as well making once beautiful regions such as the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience dangerous to traverse. A final nail to the coffin is the curse that affects delvers when making an ascent - bleeding out of every orifice and experiencing intense pain in the process. This region also hasn’t been entirely mapped out by delvers, probably due to the dangers that lurk there.

35th Layer: Sea Of Corpses

Seen as a frozen wasteland atop massive pools of seas, the Sea of Corpses gets its name from the crystalline support sections made of mud and bone that hold up the water. Within the dark depths, countless terrifying sea creatures exist many of which remain unknown to this day. Swimming in the sea will be considered suicide as the curse will cause the victim to lose their senses completely, confused, and the person will exhibit self-harming behavior.

The region also houses an ancient ritual site known as Ido Front, where the legendaryWhite Whistle Bondrewdresides and conducts his warped experiments on children. This area is also the last layer where delvers can safely return to the surface, and only a handful have ever been able to. Delvers who journey beyond to the next layer can only do so if they have attained the rank of White Whistle and will never be able to see the surface once they do.

26th Layer: The Capital Of The Unreturned

Journeying to the 6th layer is known as a White Whistle’s Last Dive as ascending any further leads to death or a loss of humanity. The layer houses some of the most irrationally terrifying creatures that reside within theMade In Abyssuniverse which includes the Pseudowater, dangerous and parasitic creatures that mimic water, as well as the Turbinid-Dragon, towering dinosaur-like horse creatures that are territorial and poisonous. Furthermore, toxic gases are naturally expelled at regular intervals.

The layer alsofeatures a Narehate village called Ibluand an outpost for the Hail Hex, delvers who are led by the White Whistle, Srajo, and wish to reach the deepest point of the abyss.

17th Layer: The Final Maelstrom And Beyond

Thought to be the final layer of the abyss, not much is known about this region. What little information that exists is passed around and transmitted internally amongst the White Whistles. One can only speculate and imagine the creatures and thingsthat exist down there, whether Lovecraftian in nature or simply astonishing to behold. What is known is that a mysterious ring can be seen from the top and that as delvers get deeper, they may come across strange abyssal creatures known as ‘gatekeepers’.

According to Lyza’s notes, she describes having encountered a creature resembling Reg at the entrance to this layer. Ascending from this layer is an immediate death sentence. Interestingly enough, there is another layer known as the Deepest Point that is thought to be the bottom.
