There’s a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season ofThe Boys. According to Laz Alonso, viewers will be getting more character development from Mother’s Milk.
Between the new characters who will be introduced intoThe Boys, like Soldier Boy, the latest development that our heroes will take Compound V to combat the supes, and everyone’s favorite evil Superman Homelander growing less stable by the minute, the series has a lot to offer when it returns. Now, Alonso says that the Amazon Primehit show will touch up more on Mother’s Milk’s backstory forThe Boysseason 3.

In a recent interview with Geekset Podcast, Alonso saidThe Boysshow creator Eric Kripkegave him the freedom to give his own interpretation of his character’s backstory instead of reciting lines word for word from the script. By doing this, Alonso believes his interpretation will make it sound more authentically like a Black man in his own character’s situation. “Eric Kripke has given me the trust to be able to re-write some of my Mother’s Milk dialogue in scenes so that it is as authentic as possible,” Alonso said. “Especially when Mother’s Milk has monologues… (In) Season 1 and Season 2, there’s at least one episode where Mother’s Milk has a really long monologue. Season 3 is going to have that as well. Now that Season 3 is getting deeper into the Mother’s Milk backstory, we’re going to find out a lot of things about him. (Kripke) allows me that license to translate what they want to say but in a way that when (the black) community watches it, they’ll believe it.”
Alonso later went on to say that a fair amount of the time, after reading the script, he would pitch changes to Kripke to make his character seem more authentically Black and most of the time, they agree. Any time that they wouldn’t, it would be because the proposed changes get in the way of future plotlines. Nonetheless, there’s always an understanding of why they did or did not make the changes. Alonso later said Hollywood used to be different in that respect because actors would just recite verbatim the material they were given, which turned off some of them because they felt they weren’t portraying their characters authentically.
Alonso’s efforts in making his portrayal of Mother’s Milk more authentically Black shows the lengths that everyone in the series goes to in order to ensureThe Boysstays of the best quality. Whenever actors and writers work together for the best possible outcome, it shows that everyone is not only on the same page but that they strive to be at every moment. The last thing you want your audience to do is to let their disbelief take them out of enjoying the product, especially with a character like Mother’s Milk.
Unlike some of theotherThe Boyscharacters, Mother’s Milk values his family more than anything else. While they were a focal point of the show’s first season, they weren’t around much in the second. Now that the show is expected to dive more into his character, we may see why he values them so much and despite that, why he participates in the dangerous line of work that he does. Doing so may give the show more layers.
The Boysseason 3 will premiere on Amazon Prime on June 3rd, 2022.
