Summary

One of the few weapons that can trulynullify Satoru Gojo’s revered Limitless abilityinJujutsu Kaisen, the Inverted Spear of Heaven is a cursed tool which first appeared when Toji Fushiguro first fought Gojo inJujutsu KaisenSeason 2. On par with Gojo’s own classification as a sorcerer, the spear is a Special Grade Cursed Tool, and combined with Toji Fushiguro’s own superhuman physical attributes, was able to deal a devastating blow to the young prodigy of the Gojo clan, prior to him achieving his full potential.

Not much has been revealed about the origins and underlying properties of the spear apart from its ability to completely negate any cursed technique, which makes it an invaluable weapon against highly powerful sorcerers. As shown byToji’s own fighting style with the blade,it is quite versatile in its applications and can be used in a variety of ways to bypass powerful cursed techniques at the level of the Limitless. The weapon’s name and aspects of its design have roots in another spear from Japanese mythology, known as Ame no Sakahoko.

What Is The Inverted Spear Of Heaven?

On the face of it,the Inverted Spear of Heavenmay seem like any other cursed tool. Initially it appears as a short dagger, with an oddly shaped blade segmented into two portions, resembling a jitte, often used by police back in Edo Period Japan. However, it seems as if the blade was formerly made up of three branches in the style of a trident, with the condition of the third broken piece currently unknown. The weapon’s guard is ‘q’ shaped, and points outwards from the handle towards the longer of the two segments which currently constitute its blade.

Extending into a black handle with a cylindrical profile, the spear has a circular link placed on the end of this section, which allows it to be fastened to metal link chains, for use as a longer range melee weapon. Besides its basic design, the most fascinating aspect of the blade is the cursed technique it carries, which is grounded in a special type of foreign cursed energy that nullifies any and all cursed techniques it comes into contact with. Hence, when it is used againsta target or a jujutsu technique, it immediately stops both from functioning, leaving them vulnerable to physical attacks.

Toji Fushiguro Inverted Spear Jujutsu Kaisen

Many aspects of the weapon’s design and naming have their roots in theAme no Sakahoko spear from Japanese mythology. The spear has connections to the twin Gods Izanami and Izanagi, as well as Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu. In some legends, it is said that the latter struck it in the summit of Mount Takachiho in Japan. The spear was said to have existed as far back as the Nara Period, and there is even an anecdote of it having been pulled from the ground by famed samurai Sakamoto Ryoma. The original blade was later partially destroyed in a volcanic eruption back in 1913, and a replica was installed in its place.

Toji Fushiguro’s Use Of The Weapon

The nullification aspect of the weapon’s function was on full display during the first fight between Toji Fushiguro and Satoru Gojo during the Star Plasma Vessel Escort Mission, when Satoru and Suguru Getowere escorting Riko Amanai to fuse with Tengen. Toji generally kept the spear within his Inventory Curse, which could shrink its own body to allow itself to be swallowed and concealed by the “Sorcerer Killer.” In this vein, he had access to the Inverted Spear of Heaven along with his entire arsenal of cursed tools and a swarm of Fly Heads at all times.

During his fight against Gojo Satoru, Toji was able to slip through Gojo’s defenses by masking his cursed energy with the Fly Heads, which permitted him to get in close. Using the Inverted Spear of Heaven, hequickly bypassed the Limitless' Infinityat point-blank range and stabbed Gojo directly through the throat. This incapacitated the Special Grade Sorcerer long enough for Toji to make quick work of him, further using the blade to slice up Gojo’s body and claim a decisive victory. He later used the blade againwhen facing Suguru Geto’sKuchisake-Onna curse, parrying all of her scissor blades before they were inches away from slicing him up.

In his final battle against Gojo, Toji Fushiguro fastened the weapon to the Chain of a Thousand Miles, another Special Grade Cursed Tool, which can extend endlessly as long as the user keeps one end concealed. He managed this by placing the other end of theblade inside the Inventory Curse. In this configuration, the weapon resembled a kusarigama, with which he attempted to nullify the Limitless' Red and Blue techniques through its extended reach.

Unfortunately for him, even after his effort to conceal the blade’s approach by launching a considerable amount of rubble towards Gojo, the awakened Limitless userunleashed his clan’s secret Hollow Purple technique, which ended the fight instantly. Later on inJujutsu Kaisen, the spear was one of only two cursed tools that could cancel out the effects of Prison Realm to free Satoru Gojo. At the time, its whereabouts and status were unknown, as it was believed that Gojo had either destroyed or sealed it overseas beyond Tengen’s barrier, to prevent anyone from obtaining the only weapon that could feasibly take him down.
