Simulation games can be stressful at times, asking the player to pay careful attention to a variety of tasks if they want to keep progressing. Some sims are good about giving the player a break from the bustle of a busy schedule, and even those that make demands of the player in other areas may include activities the player can use to unwind.

Hokko Life - Fishing Rod

Cozy games like this oneoften switch things up by including multiple fishing locations. There are three different places in which the player can fish inHokko Life, and the player can catch different fish depending on the location: theRiver, theSea,andthePond. To further complicate things, time is a factor, so even if the player fishes in the same place five times, they might have wildly different results depending on what time it was. The day is divided into five different periods for the purpose of fishing:Morning (06-11), Lunch (11-14), Afternoon (14-17), Evening (17-20),andNight (20-06).

How To Fish

Once the player has their fishing rod equipped, they need to stand at the edge of the shore near a fish, which will be visible as a shadow in the water. Cast the line near the fish to attract its attention. If the fish ignores the line and swims away, simply move to another position and cast again, repeating this process until the fish goes for the line. The fish will then bite, and the lure will bob several times. Wait until the prompt appears, then press theInteractionButtontobegin the reeling minigame.

A black bar will appear on the screen, and the player must now hold the left mouse button in order to begin reeling in the fish. Above it will be a second bar containing a picture of a fish, which will become important in a moment. When the fish in the top bar moves, the player will need to hold down the corresponding movement button (Dwhen it instructs the player toPull RightorAwhen it instructs the player toPull Left,if the player is using the default WASD key bindings). Do this right, and it won’t be long before the player isback to befriending townspeople.

Hokko Life - Fishing

Though most of the game is relaxing, fishing does have its stressful moments. Sometimes, as the player reels, a shaky yellow border will surround the bottom bar. This is an indication for the player to ease up on reeling for a moment. If the player ignores this and continues to reel, the border will turn red, indicating that they have put too much tension on the line, and the fish will escape if the player does not let up. It’s therefore important that the player not be too aggressive while reeling, instead remaining patient and allowing the fish to dictate the rate at which the player reels.

Hokko Lifeis available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
