While the mythological creatures strewn throughoutHarry Potter’slore have intrigued fans since the beginning, theFantastic Beastsfranchise put these incredible creations on the map. The films have developed a distinctive mythical critter-loving fanbase of aspiring Magiczoologists in the process.

The term “Magiczoologist” can be interchanged with “wizarding naturalist,” and encompasses any profession thathas to do with the care of magical creatures. One can specialize in studying specific breeds, dealing with the legal side of things, or educating others about these mystical critters, among other career choices. Out of all the schools in the Wizarding world, Castelobruxo prioritizes its Magiczoology courses the most, although Hogwarts and Ilvermorny have top-notch classes, too.

Harry Potter Most Iconic Magiczoologists Silvanus Kettleburn Care Of Magical Creatures Professor

7Silvanus Kettleburn

Hagrid took the Care of Magical Creatures reigns at Hogwarts from the quirky Kettleburn, who arguably made the giant’s enthusiasm for dangerous creatures seem like a walk in the park in comparison. His absurd anticsunder the Hogwarts nameresulted in his suspension (a record-breaking sixty-two times), and the loss of several limbs, leaving him with only one arm and half a leg.

Much like his successor, Kettleburn’s misfortunes have more to do with impulsivity than inefficiency, as he simply gets too excited around magical beasts to think things through. Sadly, this quirky character is a missed opportunity, as he doesn’t get much attention in the books or movies. At least a couple of games, such asHarry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, give Kettleburn some time to shine.

Harry Potter Most Iconic Magiczoologists Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank

6Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank

MostHarry Potterfans are not impressed when Professor Grubbly-Plank arrives on the scene. To be fair, their sentiments have more to do with a fierce loyalty to Hagrid, and less with her capabilities as a Care Of Magical Creatures Professor. She evidently has a thorough understanding of the mythological animal realm; however, she does tend to favor the more cute and cuddly critters, which suggests a bias in her study methods — not that her female students mind much.

Harry Potter Most Iconic Magiczoologists Mathilda Grimblehawk Fantastic Beasts Cases from the Wizarding World

Apart from her brief stint as a substitute teacher in theGoblet of Fireand theOrder of the Phoenix(and barely featuring in the films), not much is known about Grubby-Plank’s qualifications. However, if Dumbledore approves, she must meet the requirements. (Just don’t take his DADA hiring track record into account.)

5Mathilda Grimblehawk

This inquisitive Magiczooligist is relatively unknown in the fandom, except for those who are well acquaintedwith the wizarding gaming world, particularlyFantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding WorldandHarry Potter: Wizards Unite. In addition to being a magical animal enthusiast, Mathilda seeks to satisfy fans' investigative cravings by fulfilling a detective-orientated role in her narrative.

After excelling at Care of Magical Creatures at school, Mathilda proceeded to join the British Ministry of Magic as an investigator in the Beast Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Thankfully, it’s not all paper-pushing for this Chudley Cannons fanatic. As she says herself: “We don’t justinvestigate incidents involving magical creatureshere; we also get to deal with the beasts!”

Harry Potter Most Iconic Magiczoologists Charlie Weasley dragonologist

4Charlie Weasley

Book lovers are aware of how awesome Charlie is. Not only is he the cool, cheeky older Weasley brother, but he works with dragons on a regular basis. Charlie’s passions have taken him abroad to Romania, which houses an official Dragon Sanctury with a selection of Chinese Fireball, Norwegian Ridgeback, Hungarian Horntail, Common Welsh Green, Swedish Short-Snout, and Ukrainian Ironbelly breeds in its care.

Charlie has evidently made a stellar impression with the international dragon experts, as he is chosen as one of the few sent to the Triwizard Tournament to safeguard the students from disaster. He helped transport four fully-grown, broodydragons with only a handful of wizardsguarding them. That’s some pretty impressive Dragonology!

3Rubeus Hagrid

Hogwarts' half-giant groundskeeper was born for the Magiczoology life. He proved his skills at calming savage beasts early on during his school years, where he stumbled across the terrifyingly cute baby Aragog. Like any kid with broken bird syndrome,Hagrid will collect any critterin his path, overwhelmed with the desire to shower it with love, regardless of the (often painful) consequences.

Just assessing Hargid’s pet record is enough to qualify him for the Care of Magical Creatures position, as he has a great deal of experience with Acromantula, Hippogriffs, the Cerberus-like Fluffy, hatchling dragons, Blast-Ended Skrewts (his own creations), Thestrals, Salamanders, Nifflers, and so much more.

2Luna Lovegood

The beloved Loony Luna has always been intrigued by the many supernatural speciesof the wizarding world, whether they be factual or fabled. While her open-minded interpretations of life are often ridiculed, these same curious qualities lead Luna to greatness after she discovers newfound creatures along her adventures, putting her name on the map for good. Looking for things where they are least expected certainly pays off.

Unfortunately, the highly sought-after Crumple-Horned Snorkack continues to evade her to this day; however, this has not dampened her optimistic spirit in the slightest. Luna ends up marrying Newt Scamander’s grandson and fellow Magiczoologist, Rolf (although little is known about his backstory). The pair’s beast-taming skills are put through the wringer by their twins, Lorcan and Lysander.

1Newt Scamander

Arguably the most famous Magiczoologist around, Newton Scamander is glossed over in the books but goes on to inspire a wholeFantastic Beastsspin-off film seriesin his honor. Saying that Newt is passionate about animals is a vast understatement. He has dedicated his life to safeguarding these relatively helpless creatures, even before many lifesaving regulations were officially implemented.

Newt spent his childhood around magical creatures, seeing as his mother bred Hippogriffs. He has since amassed what must be the most extensive knowledge in the Magiczoology field, after studying and rescuing numerous beasts from across the globe (and collecting several species in his nifty suitcase). He takes great care to acknowledge every aspect of these amazing creatures, from their preferred climate and distinctive mating rituals to their eating and sleeping habits, and more. Any critter is truly blessed to be under Newt Scamander’s attentive protection. Just ask Pickett, Frank, and their colorful companions!
