A lot is riding onGrand Theft Auto 6living up to all the hype. Along withBethesda dragging its feet aboutThe Elder Scrolls 6, Rockstar’s follow-up to 2013’sGTA 5has been a long time coming. Naturally, there have been a lot of rumors, leaks, and general fan theories about what the next installment in the open-world franchise will contain. There’s also been a report thatGTA 6was initially going to be much bigger than it will turn out to be.

That’s according to Axios, as spotted by PCGamesN. Allegedly,Grand Theft Auto 6was originally going to be built across three cities and have four protagonists. However, the report goes on to say that things have been scaled down. Having four playable characters would have been hugely aspirational, especially considering the complex interwoven lives of the three protagonists inGTA 5. Of course, it should be said that this information has not been confirmed by Rockstar, but it wouldn’t be too surprising for the developer to initially want to make something ambitious that later had to be trimmed down.

Currently, it seems as thoughGrand Theft Auto 6will have two protagonists, possibly taking influence from Bonnie and Clyde. One character will be female, which will represent the first time a woman has been playable in aGTAgame. As well as this, it’s also been heavily suggested that the new game will take place in Vice City, the location of the 2002 beloved entry in the series.

Rockstar has yet to give any concrete information about the game, its story, or when it will release. However, another report indicated thatGrand Theft Auto 6may have been in development since 2014. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has said that the studio began working on it “in some form” not long afterGTA 5released. Again, there’s been no confirmation about whether or not this is true, so it’s best to hold off judgment for now.

Given the sheer popularity andlucrative success ofGrand Theft Auto 5, not to mention that it’s been out for nine years now, many are perhaps surprised that Rockstar hasn’t leapt at the chance to release a follow-up. However, there’s alsoGTA Onlineto consider, which is a key moneymaker for the developer. As a result, the company has probably been a little hesitant to move forward when its current games are proving so remunerative, even right now. That and the departure of the company’s co-founder and president Dan Houser in 2020 may have slowed progress down as well.

Grand Theft Auto 6is currently in development.
