In life, people come and go, but real friendships are able to withstand any harsh conditions — even an exorcism. In Amazon Prime Video’s 1988-set horror comedyMy Best Friend’s Exorcism, Elsie Fisher and Amiah Miller portray high school-aged best friends, Abby and Gretchen, whose lives are seemingly normal, but everything changes when supernatural energies enter their lives. The film, based on Grady Hendrix’s novel, is directed byKilling Eve’sDamon Thomas andGood Girl’sJenna Lamia is also attached as a screenwriter.

The first trailer forMy Best Friend’s Exorcism,which is set to be available for streaming next month on September 30th,gives a glimpse at what’s to comein the upcoming horror comedy. The scene is set with 80s costuming and music, as everything begins to change for Abby and Gretchen. After a trip to the lake turns eerie, Gretchen’s behavior begins to change, and she’s seen scribbling questionable mantras into a notebook, wielding a knife, and with her eyes rolled back into her head. When Abby confides in a religious weightlifter named Christian (played by Christopher Lowell), he tells her that the only way to get Gretchen back is to give her an exorcism.

TheMy Best Friend’s Exorcismtrailer continues to depictAbby and Christian and their attempt to release the evil spirit from Gretchen’s body, which seems to be very chaotic as Gretchen is depicted screaming demonically while tied to a bed while Abby cries and Christian cheers that they’ve “got themselves a demon.” The trailer ends with a clip of Gretchen at school lunch as she throws up all over a classmate, who’s comically concerned about her ruining his expensive t-shirt.

Filled with 80s flare and many moments for laughsMy Best Friend’s Exorcismis seemingly attempting to approach thehorror genre in a more down-to-earthway, which definitely has a chance to work in its favor. Considering most films in the genre take themselves extremely seriously as they regularly have “based on a true story” attached to them,My Best Friend’s Exorcismis self-aware as it allows for its audience to laugh at its ridiculous subject matter. This combined with its nostalgic elements, comedic timing, and lessons about friendship could make for a very compelling and slightly relatable story.

Nonetheless, based on the first look atMy Best Friend’s Exorcism, the film will definitely achieve its goal ofboth scaring and making its audience laugh. More will be unveiled when the film is available for streaming on September 30th, on Prime Video.
