Re-releases, remakes, and remasters ofFinal Fantasytitles are nothing new for the nearly 34 year old franchise. Although the upcomingFinal Fantasy Pixel Remasterhas yet to receive a release date, Square Enix will be begin making room for this series in July by removing the currently listed versions ofFinal Fantasy 5andFinal Fantasy 6.
TheFinal Fantasy Pixel Remasterwas announced earlier this month during the SQUARE ENIX PRESENTS summer showcase at E3. In this series of individually sold games,Final Fantasy 1throughFinal Fantasy6are being painstakingly updated for Steam and mobile devices. Unfortunately, many of the series' enhancements are still unknown, but recently released screenshots show examples of thePixel Remaster’s updated 16-bit artystyle. Some of these games are already available on Steam and mobile, and as such, Square Enix needs to make room for thePixel Remaster.

As of this moment, these are the extent of the updates for theFinal Fantasylibrary on Steam. The 3D remakes ofFinal Fantasy 3andFinal Fantasy 4have had no alterations to their descriptions in light of thePixel Remaster. Furthermore, jumping over to mobile, the descriptions ofFinal Fantasy 5andFinal Fantasy 6do not mention thePixel Remastereither. Considering Square Enix’s investment in mobile with theupcomingThe First SoldierandEver Crisisgames, it is only a matter of time before the company updates the classic mobile listings as well.
While many of the classicFinal Fantasytitles have been available on Steam and mobile for some time, not all of them have been reviewed that favorably. For example, the Steam version ofFinal Fantasy 6has been heavily criticized for its graphics, the character sprites appearing muddied and blurry, especially when compared to the crisp pixel art of the original. With thePixel Remasterpromising a truer depiction of those original games, perhaps these will be the definitive versions, at least visually anyways. Regardless, thePixel Remasteris shaping up to be a good excuse tosink time into the earlyFinal Fantasytitlesfor the first time or as a veteran.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remasteris coming soon to PC and mobile devices.
