Fan-made cover art forMarvel’s Spider-Manmakes fun of the controversial Mary Jane missions in the game.Marvel’s Spider-Manwas released in 2018 and received mostly positive reviews, and it was also nominated for various awards at the end of the year. Since then,Sony has remasteredMarvel’s Spider-Manon both PS5 and PC to provide graphical enhancements and other improvements.
Despite being well received by both critics and fans,Marvel’s Spider-Mancame with some controversial missions involving MJ and Miles Morales. These levels boiled down to forced stealth sequences in which players were tasked with slowly moving from cover to cover, in the hopes of reaching the objective without alerting the guards. OneMarvel’s Spider-Manfan has now made a cover for the game that references these stealth missions.

A Reddit user named patboi729 has shared afan-made cover forMarvel’s Spider-Manwith Mary Jane on the front and Spider-Man on the back. They take it one step further, as they have changed the title to “Mary Jane The Game,” with a massive forbidden symbol on Spider-Man. The rest of the cover appears fairly standard as it features the Insomniac Games logo along with an ESRB rating.
Marvel’s Spider-Manis filled with fast-paced combatencounters and action-packed set pieces, so perhaps Insomniac Games decided to add these levels to reduce repetition. It should be noted that the forced stealth sequences don’t appear to be universally hated, as some fans mention that they didn’t mind playing as MJ. Another user also agrees that stealth levels offered a break from the action, and it looks like some fans loved the mission in Norman Osborn’s Penthouse.
On the other hand, a few players state that the MJ missions are fun during the first playthrough but can become a slog while replayingMarvel’s Spider-Man. Most users seem to agree that the missions should have been more forgiving when it comes to the forced stealth, and some dislikeMary Jane’s portrayal inMarvel’s Spider-Man.
It’ll be interesting to see if thecontroversial stealth sequences return inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. Perhaps Insomniac Games can make them more engaging with a bigger focus on puzzle solving as opposed to avoiding enemies. Insomniac Games recently confirmed thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2will launch in the fall of 2023 on PS5, making it one of the biggest PlayStation exclusives scheduled for the year. Sony also has some other major titles coming next year likeHorizon Call of the Mountainfor PS VR2, along withThe Last of Us Part 1andReturnalPC ports.
Marvel’s Spider-Manis now available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
