Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, is preparing to bring theEpic Games Storeto mobile in order to give players on Android and iOS more options for how to play. Bringing the highly successfulEpic Games Store and its free giveawaysto mobile could also open up developers with more options to release their games across the mobile gaming market.
This comes from an interview Sweeney had with GameSpot during the site’s Play For All summer gaming event, in which Sweeney began by saying that theEpic Games Storeis coming to Androids and there are plans for iOS in the future. This comes as mobile devices are getting stronger and able to play more and more games like Epic Games' ownFortniteand Activision’sCall of Duty: Mobileexpanding the limits of mobile gaming.

According to Sweeney, this comes as a response to the success ofFortnite’s mobile version and Epic Games looking to do the same thing that the online storefront did for PC for Mobile. Whether or not this means there will be mobileEpic Games Store exclusivesis still undetermined, although it isn’t likely out of the question considering the company’s previous history. What can be determined, is that Epic Games is coming up against big competition against Google Play and the App Store in a similar way that the storefront had to compete with Steam on PC.
In Sweeney’s own words, Epic’s intention is to move the industry forward and push to open more developers up to releasing on platforms like Android and iOS. This could bring games that otherwise wouldn’t have released on the current mobile platforms, or that require players to download from other third parties to more players who could have an easier time navigating the Epic Games Store. As a result, more games may become available on mobile through the storefront and possibly even somefree, high profile titles.
Regardless of what this means forFortniteor a mobile-enabledUnreal Engine, this could be a push for developers to launch quality games on mobile. With the market currently flooded with loot boxes and cheaply made clones of clones with monetization at the center, if Epic Games can attract more developers, this could make for an improvement for gaming on mobile platforms. It’s a breath of fresh air when huge titles likeFortniteandCall of Duty: Mobilecome to mobile, and hopefully, this new storefront will bring more games to iOS and Android in the future.
