While the main heroes inDungeons and Dragonsare the ones the players make, there are still many heroic NPCs scattered across the various realms that players may encounter on these journeys. These heroes protect the weak and the innocent from the evil that roams the land.

They often have an evil counterpart, or at the very least one sworn nemesis, such as Rudolph Van Richten, the vampire hunter who is intent on freeing Barovia from its tyrannical overlord Strahd Von Zarovich. While many heroes won’t reach the elevated levels of a lot of villains, they still hold great power, andD&Dplayers must take care not to make enemies of them. These aresome of the best heroes across all the realms.

Level:5

Class:Ranger

This famed rangerand his beloved hamster are iconic heroes in the multiverse, always ready to lend a helping hand or a good couple of laughs. Though his reputation as a comic relief has been cemented through his jovial nature, Misc, and his hamster companion Boo, are willing and able to put up a fight when needed.

The two joined the adventuring party called the Heroes of Baldur’s Gate in their most recent story, and have traveled along the Sword Coast, to Ravenloft and even through the Nine Hells in this company, proving themselves to be seasoned adventurers.

Level:9

Class:Cleric

Those familiar withthe legendary vampire Strahdare most likely familiar with his hunter counterpart: Rudolph Van Richten, or Rictavio, his disguise in the campaign. He is one of the few people in Barovia endowed with a soul, and one of the last flickering beacons of light in the darkened mists. He is one of the twenty possible NPCs that might join the party on their quest, but is by far the most famous.

With an arsenal of spells, weapons, experience andknowledge of monstersat his disposal, no one should be fooled by his old appearance–he is more than capable in a fight.

Level:10

Class:Fighter

Though perhaps not the strongest in terms of raw power, none can deny Drizzt might be the most legendary icon in the Forgotten Realms, his tales told in one of thelargest spanning novel seriesof all time. Born in the matriarchal and evil drow society, Drizzt inherited all the traits of the drow apart from their bottomless cruelty. His tale is one of inspiration to many similar drow, escaping from the Underdark and becoming a hero.

He’s not the only drow to shun drow tradition, as the famed debonair Jarlaxle Baenre founded the Bregan D’aerthe, which housed all the houseless and outcast men of the drow. But whereas Jarlaxle became a morally gray character, offering the blades of his mercenary group to those who pay, Drizzt took up his blades to protect the needy, and slay the evil.

Level:14

A woman of many names and skills, Dove Falconhand is an established hero across Faerun, with herexploits as a Harper, a Knights of Myth Drannor, one of the fabled Seven Sisters, and part of a group that once pursued Drizzt Do’Urden, trying to determine his motives and temperament. Eventually, she determined he meant no harm and later came to respect him.

Though Dove was a skilled fighter, she did not die of old age surrounded by family and friends. She was killed by Vattick Tanthul, and in her death lived on as part of the Weave. As part of the Weave as acted as a messenger for Mystra and Sylune, though retained her personality and memories. Her spectral could be summoned through a magical pebble that was gifted to Laeral Silverhand. Dove helped Lareal in her new position as Lord of Waterdeep, remaining heroic and wise even after death.

Level:17

Class:Paladin

Before Laeral Ailverhand, there was Piergeiron Paladinson, the Open Lord of Waterdeep, and the only Lord whose identity was public knowledge. With his lawful good nature, he led as a Lord after performing a number of heroic deeds throughout his young adult life. He believed he could better serve his god Tyr by leading from a position of power rather than adventuring, so set down the sword and become a Lord.

Oft his enemies and allies mistook him as a man of low intelligence due to the fact he rarely spoke, and the times he did he spoke slowly, weighing each word carefully, This earned him the nickname Thickskull, but he used this reputation to gain the upperhand against those that would underestimate him.

Level:19

Class:Wizard

One of the Lords of Waterdeep, Laeral Silverhand is not only an astute politician but alsoa powerful caster, with many high-level spells at her disposal. She is also one of the co-founder and leaders of the Moonstars, one of the factions of the Harpers. She herself has been the victim of some of the greatest evils in the realms, which has only driven her hatred towards those that use their powers for ill deeds.

Laeral Silverhand is known to have createdsome of the most powerful magic itemsof all time, Laeral has the abilities to determine the functions of magic items by holding them in her hand, or even cause the properties to malfunction or fully nullify them. This would make het bane of anyone wielding magic items against her, though her abilities as a spellcaster are a far greater threat.

Level:25

Class:Archmage

Perhaps the most famous caster of all is the powerful Elminster, the most established caster, and the most powerful. The Elminister also has skills in other areas, dabbling in rogue, fighter, cleric and wizard as well. This means is the Elminster runs out of spell slots in conflict, he can also wield weapons and use his strength and skills with steel to dispatch of his foes.

The Elminster lived for centuries cementing his reputation far and wide from the Sword Coast to the Chult and even to the Realm of Thay. Countless times he has saved the lands from imminent doom and death, crowning him as one of the greatest and the most powerful hero of the realms.
