Dragon’s Dogma 2is one of 2024’s most talked-about games, both positively and negatively. Controversies surrounding its microtransactions and familiar gameplay mechanics have met its praise head-on, resulting in its success regardless. By and large,Dragon’s Dogma 2is more of a remake than a sequel, as it has taken the core mechanics of the first game and simply upgraded its visuals and quality of life for a more modern experience. Even the title screen reads “Dragon’s Dogma,” as opposed to “Dragon’s Dogma 2,” seemingly indicating its remake status above its status as a direct sequel to the first game. Still, the success ofDragon’s Dogma 2has nonetheless set expectations for a third game in the franchise to arrive at some point.

Currently, there is no news of aDragon’s Dogma 3on the horizon, but Capcom has reiterated its desire to turnDragon’s Dogmainto a major franchise, which seems to indicate a sequel. Additionally, judging by the success ofDragon’s Dogma 2, a sequel seems likely, as Capcom would be remiss not to capitalize on the momentum it has started. When it comes to whatDragon’s Dogma 3would look like,Dragon’s Dogma 2has proven it has one less feature to worry about by providing some of the best video game visuals in recent memory. Now, the third game could finally perfect those things that the second game failed to address.

Dragon’s Dogma 3 Can Focus Less on Visuals and More on Everything Else

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Mastered Its Visuals But Fell Short in Improving Its Gameplay

Compared to the first game,Dragon’s Dogma 2is a massive visual improvement. Of course, that’s not necessarily an impressive feat considering the first game was released twelve years ago. Even so,Dragon’s Dogma 2is still a step abovemany modern games. Its visuals are so striking, in fact, that some players have been able to make theirDragon’s Dogma 2characters look like real people. Unfortunately, while its graphics are praiseworthy and one of its best features,Dragon’s Dogma 2failed to fix many of the issues that were present in the first game, garnering criticism from those who consider themselves longtime fans of the franchise.

Dragon’s Dogma 2hasn’t foregone all possible improvements, of course, as even itsPawn systemis more intuitive this time around. Given that Pawns were among the originalDragon’s Dogma’s biggest criticisms, it helps that the sequel has done what it can to improve them. However,Dragon’s Dogma’s infamous AI is still just as unpredictable inDragon’s Dogma 2, as even the Pawns in its improved Pawn system can still make some terrible decisions in exploration and combat. Furthermore, the feel and performance ofDragon’s Dogma 2’s combat hasn’t changed since the first game, meaning it’s just as clunky and janky as it ever was.

Dragon’s Dogma 3 Can Fix the Issues That Began With the First Game

IfDragon’s Dogma 3ends up happening, it will be prime time for Capcom to finally improve the issues that should have been fixed after the first game. SinceDragon’s Dogma 2has all but established a visual standard for the franchise moving forward, the next game can spend less time focusing on the way the game looks and more time focusing on how it performs. In addition to the gameplayissues thatDragon’s Dogma 2failed to fix, it also launched with noticeable performance bugs, particularly when it came to walking through one of the game’s larger cities. If Capcom devoted less time to visuals and more time to everything else inDragon’s Dogma 3, perhaps it would succeed where the second installment failed.
