Summary
A streamer spent 48 hours building a Rogue inDiablo 4’s Hardcore mode during Season of the Malignant just to have it meet an untimely and excruciating end. Blizzard’s record-settingDiablo 4has recently released its first season, which has players starting fresh characters to find Malignant Hearts and take on new threats.
Diablo 4offers two modes of play at the moment. The only penalty for dying inDiablo 4’s standard Normal mode is a small chip to gear durability. A simple repair at a blacksmith costing a relatively small amount of coin is enough to fix the gear, getting it working at its full effectiveness once again. Formore daringDiablo 4players, Hardcore mode not only offers the promise more illustrious loot, but also the looming threat of permadeath; a single death resulting in Game Over and the permanent loss of the character and all progress associated with it.

Diablo 4streamer Wudijo, considered by many in the community to be one of the bestDiabloplayers, suffered a painful Hardcore mode death resulting in the loss of his level 93 Rogue, which had 48 hours of leveling poured into it since the beginning of Season 1. During a race to level 100 inSeason of the Malignant, Wudijo was mid-stream in the middle of a Nightmare dungeon when he experienced a brief loss of power which disconnected him fromDiablo 4,killing his level 93 Rogue and tossing 48 hours of play time out the window.
Upon logging back in to see the Hall of Fallen Heroes post-death report,Diablo 4claimed that hisRogue met its end at the hands of a Revenant. With this, it seems likely that Wudijo’s Rogue remained vulnerable in the dungeon after the disconnection where it was defenselessly attacked and killed by the Revenant.
Blizzard is aware of the dangers Hardcore players can face due to connection issues and are looking to implement a solution down the road.Diablo 4producer Joe Piepiora had previously confirmed a change to the Scroll of Escape item. Currently, players who’ve found a Scroll of Escape can use it to escape hairy situations by teleporting to a safe city or town. In Season 3, Blizzard is planning to modify the item so that it’s automatically activated if the player is disconnected while in a dungeon. Despite having to wait until Season 3, this is sure to be great news forDiablo 4’s Hardcore playerswho fear the looming possibility of a character-ending disconnection.
Diablo 4is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
