Destiny 2’s Season of the Deep is in its first week since release, and the Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon is also here for players to tackle as they discover the secrets of the depths on Titan. Excitement within the community is considerably high for these reasons, but also because of Bungie’s big announcements at thePlayStation Showcasewith Marathon getting a sort of reboot in the form of a PvP extraction shooter andDestiny 2itself getting a teaser trailer for The Final Shape expansion. While Marathon is going to have eyes locked onto itself for a while, The Final Shape is already crossing an item off players' wish list forDestiny 2, and it’s a big one.

The launch of theLightfall expansion forDestiny 2was not met with rave reviews, and that’s mostly because of the convoluted and lackluster story experienced in the campaign as well as frustrating gameplay elements. These are both issues that Bungie has been trying to fix for a while with consistent updates and hotfixes to the game in Season of Defiance, and now with a renewed focus on consistent storytelling in Season of the Deep to finally explain what the Veil actually is. Amidst the chaos, one change made with Lightfall had players nostalgic for times now gone, and that’s the addition of Cayde-6’s memorial in the Tower - but little did they know that it was likely a way to foreshadow his return.

The Final Shape Marking the Return of Cayde-6 is Destiny 2 Players' Dream

Cayde-6 has always been a beloved figure withinDestiny 2and its predecessor, probably thanks to his upbeat personality and his acting as comic relief in a game where stories can take a dark turn very soon. Everything changed with the Forsaken expansion, however, which is whereDestiny 2’s Cayde-6was killed off by Uldren Sov, only for players to exact revenge on him at the end of the campaign.

Without the Hunter Vanguard and his role as a compassionate support character capable of cracking jokes even in the worst scenarios,Destiny 2’s seasonal narrative and the major story beats in its yearly expansions became more somber. This was for the best, to a degree, sinceDestiny 2was gradually approaching the peak of the Light and Darkness saga that will be culminating with The Final Shape, and the Witness' gloomy schemes as well as Guardians exploring morally grey areas needed a moment of respite from the franchise’s first era.

However, Cayde-6 remained a true hero for Guardians, to the point that many wanted him back in some capacity. When his killer, Uldren Sov, came back as the Lightbearer that goes by the name of Crow, players felt that Cayde had been betrayed - or at least his legacy, even if Crow ended up being one of the best characters in the game with time. With Cayde finally returning inDestiny 2’s The Final Shape, many players are rejoicing at the prospect of meeting him again, especially because it could feel like telling stories to a good old friend.

The Final Shape’s trailer confirmsDestiny 2leaksthat date back to Lightfall, too, as it was mentioned that Cayde-6 would return in a so-called “Valley of Time” and act as a guide there for players, resuming his old role. With Nathan Fillion also coming back to voice the character, it seems thatDestiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion will be a dream come true for many fans. It remains to be seen what sort of impact Cayde’s return toDestiny 2will have to the overall story, but players will get to learn more in just under three months.

Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
