With all the gritty live-action superhero stuff out there, it seems like the world could use a little more family-friendly cuteness. Granted, when it comes to comic book movies, even the cute things tend to go pretty hard, and that seems to be the case withDC’s upcoming animated filmLeague of Super-Petsas well. Featuring a star-studded cast and all the nonlethal action a parent could hesitantly ask for, the new entry into the same universe that featured Granny’s Peach Tea is ready to ask the question, “what if a dog had superpowers and also social anxiety?”
Warner Bros. just released the first trailer forDC’s League of Super-Pets, and it’s chock full of exactly what one would expect from an animated movie featuring talking animals. The main focus appears to be Krypto the Superdog, the loyal companion of Superman who apparently doesn’t get out much. AfterLex Luthor captures the Justice League, the respective pets of each superhero member realize they must band together to rescue their best friends, thanks to a push from Krypto.

Naturally, these aren’t everyday pets. WhileKrypto famously already has powers, the rest of the animals appear to all gain super abilities when a mysterious red space rock finds its way into the room where they all just so happen to be in their cages. Now boasting powers like super speed, invincibility, and electricity, they’re all finally at the right skill level to strike back at Luthor. Naturally, it won’t be so easy, and as it turns out, they may not have been the only pets to receive superpowers.
The voice cast is as bloated with celebrities as one would expect from a modern animated movie. Dwayne Johnson lends his talents as Krypto, putting the former wrestler front and center in the group. Other big names include John Krasinski as Superman, Kevin Hart as Batman’s dog Ace, Natasha Lyonne as The Flash’s turtle Merton, Vanessa Bayer as Wonder Woman’s pig PB (not to be confused withthe energetic asari fromMass Effect: Andromeda), Marc Maron as Lex, and Diego Luna as Green Lantern’s squirrel Chip. Other cast members in currently undisclosed roles include Kate McKinnon, Keanu Reeves, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, and Jameela Jamil.
League of Super-Petslooks like pretty standard fare for animated family movies. Kids are bound to enjoy it, especially in this day and age wheresuperhero movies dominate the box officeand those same heroes have begun to make successful pushes into the TV world. Young viewers probably already have their own favorite superheroes, and now this will give many of them some new characters to love.
Plus, parents probably won’t be too bored when their kids drag them to see this. There are a couple of good gags in the trailer, particularly the “…Fed-Ex…” joke. But all in all, it looks like it will be a decently enjoyable romp for kids who want some more DC stuff with a little less of the DCEU stuff.
DC’s League of Super-Petswill release in theaters on May 20th, 2022.
