New information surrounding the greatly anticipatedCall of Duty:Modern Warfare 2is gradually being released, and hype surrounding the title is predictably reaching a new high. On May 23, officialCall of Dutychannels released a video confirming the official release date of the title, which is set to release later this year.
In addition to confirming the release date, this video also confirmed and showcased the key characters that will feature prominently within the campaign ofModern Warfare 2. While many characters outlined in the video will be familiar to long-term fans of the franchise, there was one in particular that has not been seen before: Colonel Alejandro Vargas.

Given the acclaim for 2019’sModern Warfare,it is fair to say that news of a sequel has been met with joy by many fans of the franchise. Fortunately fans have been provided a release date for the game, but most of the finer details concerningModern Warfare 2are still up to speculation.
It is rumored, however, thatModern Warfare 2is set to run on a brand-new game engine, with it is being safe to assume that it will take inspiration from the same visceral IW engine that was used in 2019’sModern Warfare, with a focus on high fidelity and accurate sound design. It has also been heavily rumored thatModern Warfare 2will launch alongside a sequel to the massively popularCall of Dutybattle royaleWarzone. If the game is tolaunch alongsideWarzone 2, it would be a clear statement of intent from Activision as to the intended scale and longevity ofModern Warfare 2.
The Characters Revealed for Modern Warfare 2
The characters featured in the release date confirmation video forModern Warfare 2were done so via the showcasing of their respective character arts and snippets of voice lines for each character. In total, the characters revealed in this video wereSgt. John “Soap” MacTavish, Captain John Price, Sgt. Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, Lt. Simon “Ghost” Riley, and Colonel Alejandro Vargas.
While they have not physically appeared within the campaign of the recent reboot of theModern Warfarefranchise, older fans will definitely know of Soap and Ghost, two pivotal characters who were fan-favorites within the originalModern Warfaretrilogy. On the other hand, both Gaz and Captain Price are characters who featured heavily within thestory of 2019’sModern Warfare, as well as the original games, who are predictably reprising their roles within this upcoming sequel to the popular reboot.
Alejandro Vargas in Modern Warfare 2
The only character who all fans will be unfamiliar with, regardless of their level of experience withtheCall of Dutyfranchise, is that of Alejandro Vargas. Alejandro Vargas is slated to be an integral figure within the campaign ofModern Warfare 2,and will be a completely new character to the franchise.
While exact details regarding the character of Alejandro Vargas are still relatively unknown at this point, an article posted on the officialCall of Dutywebsite offers some valuable additional context. According to the article, it appears that Vargas is not actually a member of Task Force 141, and will be working alongside the team as a member of the Mexican Special Forces. It is also worth noting that Vargas shares a first name with Alejandro Rojas fromthe originalMW2campaign. Rojas was a Brazilian arms dealer within the original game who acted in an antagonistic role. It’ll be interesting to see if the similarly-named Vargas plays a new part, or if Infinity Ward’s choice of name is a sign of things to come.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is set to release on October 28.
