4The Blackfyre Rebellion

The Blackfyre Rebellion tells the story of Daemon I Blackfyre and Daeron II Targaryen. Daemon Blackfyre, formerly Daemon Waters, was the bastard child of King Aegon IV. Daemon was eventually legitimized by the king on his deathbed. A few years prior, the king had gifted him Blackfyre, thelegendary weaponoriginally owned by Aegon the Conqueror. When Daemon was legitimized, he took the name “Blackfyre” instead of Targaryen. Thus, house Blackfyre was born, with Daemon at its helm.

The first Blackfyre Rebellion went on for a year, and it began when Daemon Blackfyre opted to claim the throne and usurp his half-brother, Daeron Targaryen, Aegon IV’s heir and eldest trueborn son. Three more Blackfyre rebellions followed after this, which caused unrest that lasted several decades. This point in Westerosi history also saw the rise of several keySong of Ice and Firecharacters including Duncan the Tall and Aegon V, also known as Dunk and Egg.

3Aegon’s Conquest

One of the most momentous events in Westeros was Aegon’s Conquest. Aegon, along with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, united six of the seven kingdoms in a span of just two years. Although the battles are mostly one-sided due to the might of the Targaryens' dragons, this story has no shortage of intrigue and drama and introduces a ton of fascinating characters, true to the DNA ofGame of Thrones.

Aegon’s Conquest also details the sheer power of the three biggestdragons to fly the skies of Westeros. While fans have already seen Vhagar, originally ridden by Visenya Targaryen, it will be awesome to see Meraxes and Balerion on screen. Both of these dragons are massive as well, but Balerion in particular is said to be so massive that when he flew overhead, the shadow he cast covered entire towns.

2Rhoynish Wars

The Rhoynish Wars marks the several battles between the Rhoynars and Valyrians. Fought thousands of years before the events ofGame of Thrones, this series of battles went on for more than two hundred years. The wars began when the expansion of Valyria threatened the people of Rhoyne. Thus, wars between the dragonlords of Valyria and the water wizards or Rhoyne began.

Not only is the aspect of a battle between fire and water incredible, but the Rhoynish Wars also highlights Valyria at its strongest. By the end of the wars, Valyria brought over 300 dragons to war, which forced the Rhoyrnar to ultimately flee Essos. This departure was led by Princess Nymeria of Ny Sar. It’s said that the Princess used over 10,000 ships to evacuate the surviving Rhoynars. This event is often retold inA Song of Ice and Fireand is simply remembered as “10,000 Ships.”

1The Long Night

Another moment in thehistory of Westerosthat’s frequently retold and has since become a Westerosi legend is the Long Night. The Long Night refers to the point in history when the Known World was covered in complete cold and darkness. During which, the people of Westeros and beyond experienced famine, diseases, fear, and countless deaths. As if the endless winter wasn’t enough, the Long Night also spawned demons known as the Others from the northernmost point of Westeros.

The Others, also known as White Walkers, wielded swords made of ice and were able to bring the dead back to life to fight the living. The children and the First Men came together to fight the Others. This battle between the living and the dead saw the rise of heroes such as the Last Hero and Azor Ahai. It also marked the formation of the Night’s Watch and the establishment of the Wall.
